Small independent retailers are the heart of our high streets. They create local jobs, bring character to our communities, and keep money circulating within the local economy.
Whether it’s the weekend takeaway, Milk for your evening cuppa, that morning bacon roll or the sharp haircut for going out. These retailers are vital.
But with the latest increases in business rates, many small shops are being pushed closer to the edge. Unlike large chains and online giants, independent retailers often operate on very tight margins. Rising overheads — energy, rent, and now higher business rates — make it harder to keep the doors open.
When small retailers struggle, our whole community feels it. Empty shop fronts don’t just affect business owners; they change the look, feel, and vibrancy of our towns and neighbourhoods.
We need a fairer system that supports small businesses rather than making it harder for them to survive. Protecting independent retailers means protecting local jobs, local investment, and the character of our high streets.
If we value thriving local communities, we must ensure the businesses that sustain them have a fair chance to succeed.
To do that, we need people who are prepared to put residents' voices in front of the big parties, and as a Taxi owner myself, I’ve been fighting the council over issues affecting my trade for 6 years.
On Thursday 19th March vote independent but more importantly keep shopping local.
