Today, our day started with Amy Davies and Pete Martin popping along to the hub to do a relaxed photoshoot. This is to help towards research for Helping Hands Community Trusts 30th anniversary which is fast approaching.

We then began our 2 day update paediatric first aid training.

As a company we always ensure that our services are quality led. Keeping our training up to date is always paramount.

Oh, and award season is here! Wish me luck! 🍀

Being a food based company, and working with food, we understand the importance of allergy training.

Currently we follow Natasha’s Law. Another young person who died from an allergic reaction.

We ensure that all allergies are catered for, food packets are on site at all times, allergies are reordered and consent forms are signed by parents/carers before children can access our sensory sessions.

If you haven’t heard of this before, then definitely go and do your research.

This is a reason why I worry when people try to ‘copy’ what we do, it’s not as simple as just putting some food out for children to play with!

Benedict’s Law is a set of national protections designed to improve allergy safety in schools. Pleased to share, that our sign is now on the building 😍

I’ve had a week of stress, tears and imposter syndrome.

Constantly asking myself if this new offering of ours is going to work?

Will children want to spend their days with us?

Will schools recommend us and want to send their children for their alternative education?

Will parents and carers like what we’re offering?

Honestly, I can’t answer these questions but I really hope everyone sees the passion, dedication and care that has gone into this.

I wholeheartedly want this to work and we want to give children the education and care that they need and deserve

A little story for you.

Right here is my littlest babe on her first day to high school.

Trying desperately to hold back the tears this morning.

This beauty here was my inspiration for opening up my business - Messy Senses.

When I was pregnant with her, I was working 24 hour shifts in a respite service for very poorly children. I was part of the management team so I had to do sleep ins, some nights being woken up to 9 times to administer emergency medication. I also had a 3 year old who some days didn’t really see her mummy due to work.

Even though I loved my job, I loved being a mummy more. This was when we decided as a family that I’d hand my notice in, leaving my long career in health social care and education. It was time to embrace being a full time mum and await the arrival of this little lady!

Well, fast forward to when she was 3 months old. I took both my girls to a mums and tots group and quite honestly, thought I could do better.

I wanted a group to be inclusive of all abilities-this wasn’t.

I wanted a group to be welcoming where mums weren’t clicky-this wasn’t.

I wanted to feel welcomed by the group leader - again this wasn’t.

You get my thoughts..

So that’s when I went home and began creating Messy Senses.

This is where my passion for inclusion shone. I was able to do two things I absolutely loved. Building an inclusive business with my children at my side, a mummy who was present but also showing them the world of diversity along the way.

Now look where we are 10 years later, if you’ve followed my journey then you’ll see the huge achievements with Messy Senses.

Today I’m nervous and excited for my girl starting her new adventure, but equally I’m starting one too.

Next week we are welcoming lots of professionals to our brand new alternative provision.

I often sit back and reflect on life and what we’ve all achieved as a family. Today is no different but with so many more emotions.

Messy Senses hasn’t just been a business for me, it’s been a lifestyle and a passion.

Like I’ve said to my daughter today, in no time, this will be our new ‘normal’ and life has we know it will hopefully be smooth running again.

But, today, we are all a little bit delicate and a little bit emotional as we tackle these new beginnings.

Did you know roughly 300,000 children of compulsory school age (5 to 16) are out of school in England, with absence rates generally lower in primary years than in secondary.

Over the last few years we have seen many increases in

👉 Mental Health & Anxiety leading to school avoidance

👉Unmet Special Educational Needs leading to lack of support for staff, students and parents/carers, at times meaning that school is an unsafe environment due to staff training and knowledge of individual needs

👉Even now we see post pandemic shifts in attitudes surrounding the importance of education and attendance, with weakened attendance routines and long term ill health being a factor within family networks.

With all that being said, every child has the right to an education, but the mainstream environment isn’t always the right fit.

The school environment does not meet all children’s needs which is why Alternative Provisions are on the rise. Providing a bespoke learning environment where children can truly thrive.

As we approach our opening of our Primary Alternative Provision, please take a moment to look at these figures again and realise the importance of our work.

We’ve had such a busy few days!

Amelia has worked with so many children, young people and adults during her work experience.

Yesterday was our sensory stimulation sessions for our adults at Mosaic 1898 followed by 2 sessions of alternative provision at Parkland Primary School with groups of year 6 students.

Today has been a full on day at Ash Field Academy where she has helped to deliver 4 sensory alternative provision sessions to a range of children of different ages and abilities.

I love watching how she takes on such calm nurturing approach, using her initiative at all times.

She’s such a hard worker and takes everything in her stride, always accepting diversity within what we do as a company.
