No Wrong Path - Kirsty's story

I was a quiet teenager growing up with a huge lack in confidence. I didn’t fully apply myself at school because I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. While all my friends were filling out their University application forms, I still had no idea what I was going to do. I felt a sense of pressure to make a decision.

My mum and dad encouraged me to go to a healthcare careers day in Inverness, and I’m so grateful they did. I was completely won over by the University of Stirling Nursing stand. They had a campus in Inverness (now UHI), I would have most of my placements close to home in Wick, and the entry requirements felt achievable. It seemed like the perfect fit. Until that day, I had never even considered nursing, but I left knowing that it was exactly what I wanted to do, much to my parent’s surprise! Looking back at my 6th year report card, my guidance teacher certainly didn’t think nursing would be the best career choice which at the time felt quite disheartening and left me questioning if this was the right decision.

I failed Higher English at school, yet during my nursing degree I discovered that I loved writing essays. I had fantastic lecturers, I was genuinely interested in what I was learning and I thoroughly enjoyed every part of my training. I was fortunate enough to be offered a Staff Nurse post shortly after qualifying. At that time, I genuinely believed I would spend my career working on that same ward until I retired. However, as I gained experience, my ambition started to grow. I met so many inspiring nurses who encouraged me to believe in myself and to keep progressing. Their influence gave me the confidence to apply for a trainee Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) post in a GP practice.

I was in my element. I loved every aspect of the role and went on to achieve an MSc in Advanced Nurse Practitioner with Distinction. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that would be possible. I went from failing Higher English at school with teachers not believing in me to graduating with distinction at Master's level and working in a role that I absolutely love. If someone had told me 20 years ago that this is where I would be today, I would never have believed them.

If I could give any advice, it would be that your future isn't defined by your school grades, your confidence as a teenager, or what other people think you're capable of. Instead, sometimes all it takes is one opportunity, one decision, and the courage to take that first step. By doing this, you never know where that path might lead you!
