Mayor's Update - August Part 1

'With the summer holidays in full swing, it was a delight to get out and see the groups and organisations the council are working with to deliver family activities across the month.
I continued my tour of the Street Sports activities being delivered by Live Well at The Wishing Well, this time at Limetree Park, McLaren Street, and Samuel Street. The kids getting involved were engaged and eager to play football with other sports on offer as well. It was great to see fans of the Wishing Well team following them from one park to the next as they spent time at each day every weekday.
As part of the summer activities, I also visited Crewe Heritage Centre to meet the team from Cheshire Archives and meet up with the volunteers from Creative Crewe. The work they have been doing over the summer with the families was impressive, encouraging them to return each week to add to a book of artwork.
The annual Play Day returned to Queen's Park with so many familiar community groups bringing their activities to the visiting crowds such as Creative Crewe, Cheshire East's Family Hub, Everybody Leisure, Wishing Well, Home Instead, Friends for Leisure, YMCA Cheshire, the Royal British Legion CLASP & more!
I joined the Rotary Club of Crewe and Nantwich Weaver for a visit to the Bentley Motors showroom and to hear about the work they are doing to support the local community. The history on display is impressive and a testament to Bentley and Crewe's history in car manufacturing.
Finally, it was an honour to join the Royal British Legion and Friends of Queens Park Crewe at Burma Star Island to mark the anniversary of VJ Day and to remember the forgotten army. Lots more continues to happen this month as we draw to the end of the summer so watch this space for more updates.'

Mayor's Update- July Part 2

'So much has been happening, the end of July was another very busy time visiting community groups and learning about the wonderful things people were doing, and how we play our part in making Crewe a positive place to live.

For the second half of July, I went along to the Platform Gallery exhibiting school artwork which was exceptional. Brookhouse Drive Allotments Crewe Cheshire were raising money for St. Luke's Hospice and it was nice to chat with visitors and allotment residents.
At the Bentley Manor Care Home, I was delighted to see their annual cultural and diversity event with the care team sharing cultural dishes and dance with the residents.
I had a very constructive meeting with Pride of Romani and the NHS team about mental health and cultural barriers within the system, looking for ways to encourage the local community to break them down.
As the summer holidays began, I went out to see the Wishing Well's Street Sports programme supported by Crewe Town Council at Derby Docks and Leighton Park, getting to see the efforts local councillors have put into improving the parks in their wards. This was followed by an invite to Wishing Well's Chester Bridge site for their HAF programme, supporting parents, carers and children, with entertainment, activities and food. The work done there is inspiring to see, and the building is huge with so much for the kids to do.
I got to go to Crewe Railway Station to meet the Railway Children on a s day tour of Britain raising awareness of vulnerable young people on the network. It was great to see Her-Place Charitable Trust and Modern Tribe Collective CIC and the team from Avanti West Coast were very supportive.
The big event was the Barrio Fiesta at Queen's Park which was so full of colour and celebration, a perfect way to join in with Filipino traditions and style. It was a wonderful experience and so many people came to enjoy the festivities.
I was pleased to be able to be there for the reveal of our new mural at the Bus Station which looks amazing and is a treat to look over the history of our town.
Finally, my congratulations to the young adults from Crewe who received The King's Trust award at Winsford Fire Station. It was wonderful to meet and get to know them.'

Mayor's Update - July Part 1

'Supporting our community of Crewe continues to be such an honour and the groups and activities I've been invited to participate in demonstrate the wealth of talent and enthusiasm in our area.
July began with an invite to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Deaf & Sensory Network, DSN, in Northwich with mayors representing across the county. I spoke at the Safe Opportunities Graduation Ceremony at Cheshire College - South & West and was privileged to hand out the student's awards.
I was invited to St. Mary's Church in Nantwich for an amazing performance of Spanish influenced classical music at their Youth Arts Festival. Also with the Black 5 steam engine resting at the Crewe Heritage Centre, I went to see one of our own Crewe built engines and connect with our heritage.
Then came the big calendar event of Crewe Day, our annual celebration of the culture and history of our town organised by Crewe Town Council. The public were amazing and the acts entertaining, creating an wonderful day.
The next week I joined Friends for Leisure for their Science event where the young people enjoyed watching things blow up. I loved returning to Hope4more's latest art exhibition showing the incredible talents of the young people they support.
That evening I joined the Royal British Legion for their Veteran's Garden Party. They have been so helpful in showing how much support veterans can get and many who don't know they're are entitled to it. I also represented Crewe at the Knutsford mayor's civic parade which was great to catch up with fellow mayors and share our experiences so far.
Finally for this update, I went along to Bee Inspired's fundraiser at the YMCA Cheshire, meeting many people who have already benefitted from their support including new volunteers who have got involved. Well done to Carol and the team.

Mayor's Update - June part 2

'The second half of the month started with a sports day between Primrose House Care Home and Hollymere House Care Home to celebrate the start of the World Cup. It was a great way to have everyone out enjoying themselves and the friendly rivalry between the care homes was very entertaining.
Then we had our next event at Queen's Park which was Crewe Town Council's Picnic in the Park where I got to open the event and speak with several families camped out for a nice afternoon.
However, I couldn't stay as I was off to support the community of East Timorese and Comunidade Crewe for the oath taken by their newly sworn in president. It was a wonderful chance to exchange cultural ideas.
I went to the Reaseheath College graduation ceremony to support our Crewe students, I then went to the The Rising Sun for their reopening evening to support their new look and support in our community.
I also visited the NeuroMuscular Centre in Winsford to see the support they give across the county for those dealing with neuromuscular conditions. I then went to Shavington Primary School to talk to the pupils about local council and being the mayor. They asked great questions from my role model to how heavy the chain is!
It was a pleasure to go to the YMCA Cheshire building to see the launch of our new Crewe 10K run which sets off in October.
The next week was focused on the Armed Forces with the flag raising at the start and the Armed Forces Weekend at Queen's Park. I got to know several veterans groups such as the Royal British Legion, SSAFA, Crewe Men in Sheds, Mentell and the Armed Forces & Veterans Breakfast Club. The weekend was a delight with shows, activities and flyovers!
During that week I also attended the 50th anniversary of the Parkinson's UK Crewe branch and met some wonderful people.
The last event I attended for June was the Concert at the Crewe Lyceum to acknowledge the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. It was a very moving piece delivered by Crewe Brass, Fox Dance Academy - Nantwich and other artists.
July is already off to an exciting start and I can't wait to meet more amazing people working to make other people's lives better.'
