Supporting our high streets 🏪
The closure of Coughlans this week is a real loss for Croydon South, and our thoughts are with the staff and families affected.
Many local businesses are facing intense pressures from energy costs to business rates, and we want to hear directly from traders about the support they need. There are a range of ways the council can help businesses including reviewing parking and access issues, promoting the high street and exploring available business support and grants.🈺
The Labour Government has already started reforming business rates to better protect the high street with major changes starting from May 2027 with more potentially on the way.
The changes mean many smaller high street businesses will pay less, while the largest commercial properties, including distribution warehouses used by online retailers will contribute more to help fund that support.
The Government is already working to fix the broken energy system we inherited: expanding secure domestic supply and ending the link between volatile gas prices and electricity bills. These reforms are designed to make costs more stable for both businesses and households over time. 🏡🏡
We’ll continue working with local traders, residents and community groups to ensure Croydon South’s high streets have the support they need to thrive.
