Irresponsible Dog Owners & Walkers

You may recall that we recently ran a petition regarding the increase in people who own or walk dogs who do not pick up after them.

Overwhelmingly residents agreed that action is needed to reduce the piles that are left behind.

We wrote to the City of London Corporation who look after Coulsdon Commons, as here we had noticed a particular rise in irresponsibility.

We called for action in tackling the issue and as a result ranger patrols will be increased on New Hill and notices have been put up urging people to pick up after their dog.

There is a fine of up to £1,000 for offenders, so far cheaper to spend a small amount on poo bags.

Farthing Downs has recently been awarded Green Flag status and it would be a crying shame if a few irresponsible people jeopardised this.

We will keep track as to whether we start to see an improvement.

If you have any views on the issue, please comment or send us an email at [email protected]

A splendid afternoon at Old Coulsdon Village Fair on Saturday. Expertly organised as ever.

Huge congratulations too for taking the early decision to scrap the dog show in the heat. RSPCA (England & Wales) will applaud you for that.

The fine ladies of Coulsdon Cupcakes never fail with their themed post box toppers.

They have pulled out the stops for a superb World Cup edition, proudly on display at Tudor Parade in Old Coulsdon.

We will be going to Old Coulsdon Village Fair. Lovely day for it - see you there.

Supporting our high streets 🏪

The closure of Coughlans this week is a real loss for Croydon South, and our thoughts are with the staff and families affected.

Many local businesses are facing intense pressures from energy costs to business rates, and we want to hear directly from traders about the support they need. There are a range of ways the council can help businesses including reviewing parking and access issues, promoting the high street and exploring available business support and grants.🈺

The Labour Government has already started reforming business rates to better protect the high street with major changes starting from May 2027 with more potentially on the way.

The changes mean many smaller high street businesses will pay less, while the largest commercial properties, including distribution warehouses used by online retailers will contribute more to help fund that support.

The Government is already working to fix the broken energy system we inherited: expanding secure domestic supply and ending the link between volatile gas prices and electricity bills. These reforms are designed to make costs more stable for both businesses and households over time. 🏡🏡

We’ll continue working with local traders, residents and community groups to ensure Croydon South’s high streets have the support they need to thrive.

We ran a survey about the ‘foul business of dog poo’, which has been noticeably worse on the beautiful commons of Coulsdon since free poo bags were axed a few years ago in a cost cutting exercise.

Whilst we all know dog owners & walkers should be responsible for the mess, the facts are there for all to see or step in, whilst almost 80% of survey responses were in favour of bringing back free bags in our parks & green spaces.

We have therefore written to the London Corporation who manage Coulsdon Commons to ask if they could be brought back, perhaps on a trial basis first and maybe sponsored by a third party as they are in Surrey Heath for example.

We will keep you posted.

The foul business of dog poo in Croydon.

We are calling on Croydon Council to reintroduce free poo bags in our parks & green spaces.
