These include:

Croydon University Hospital,
Purley Hospital, for outpatient appointments and diagnostic tests
The Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Centre in Thornton Heath
Community bases at Purley, Sanderstead, New Addington, Broad Green, Woodside and others throughout Croydon. A minor injuries unit in New Addington

The Trust was formed on 1st August 2010 through the integration of Croydon Community Health Services and Mayday Healthcare NHS Trust. Around 3,500 staff provide services for a population of over 340,000 people who are relatively young with a high level of ethnic diversity.

💜 One year of the Garden Suite

This Baby Loss Awareness Week, we’re marking one year since the reopening of our Garden Suite at Croydon University Hospital.

The Garden Suite provides a private, peaceful and comforting space within our maternity unit for families experiencing pregnancy loss, keeping them close to our specialist maternity teams while giving them the privacy and dignity they need at an incredibly difficult time.

The refurbishment was made possible thanks to generous support from Croydon Health Charity, Inspiration Healthcare and Royal Parks Half Marathon fundraisers, alongside the valuable contribution of volunteers and, most importantly, the insight and involvement of bereaved families.

Over the past year, the space has been transformed with new furnishings, flooring, landscaping, plants and trees, creating a calm environment where families can spend time together.

The project was led by Hannah Lloyd, Pregnancy Loss Specialist Midwife, in partnership with bereaved families.

We know that the environment around families matters. Privacy, nature and a sense of calm can all help to provide comfort and dignity during moments of profound loss.

The Garden Suite complements our wider bereavement support, including our annual Butterfly Service for Baby Loss, taking place this Sunday.

Meet Dr Rucha Madkar, Specialty Doctor in Radiology at Croydon Health Services.

Since joining the Trust in 2018, Dr Madkar has built extensive experience in General Radiology, alongside a specialist interest in Breast Radiology. She plays a key role in breast imaging and multidisciplinary patient care, while also supporting the Endocrine and Haemato-oncology MDTs with expert imaging input to aid diagnosis and treatment planning.

Following Specialist Registration, Dr Madkar has taken on additional responsibilities across the department, contributing to service development and the day-to-day running of Radiology. She is passionate about delivering high-quality patient care through accurate interpretation, attention to detail, effective communication and collaborative working.

Meet Mr Sajid Malik, Specialist Doctor in Surgery with a special interest in Upper GI and minimally invasive surgery at Croydon Health Services.

Internationally qualified with FCPS, FRCS and FACS, Mr Malik specialises in anti-reflux, bariatric, complex abdominal wall and robotic surgery. Alongside his clinical work, he has built an impressive academic portfolio, including peer-reviewed publications, ten book chapters and presentations at international conferences.

Passionate about innovation, research and education, Mr Malik serves as Chair of the ELSA International Communications Committee and World Congress of Endoscopic Surgery. He has also developed a digital platform that supports learning and collaboration across the global minimally invasive surgery community.

Mr Malik's career reflects a strong commitment to advancing surgical practice through research, teaching and international collaboration, helping to improve outcomes for patients both locally and worldwide.

Congratulations to Sister Esther Onyeanuna from Purley 2 Ward, our first-ever DAISY Award honouree at CHS. 🌼

The DAISY Award is an international recognition programme that celebrates nurses who go above and beyond to provide outstanding care. It was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, whose family wanted to thank the nurses who made a difference during his care.

Today, Deborah Kelly, Chief Nurse, presented Sister Esther with her DAISY certificate, pin and Healer's Touch sculpture, and read out the nomination that earned her the award.

Joined by Matthew Kershaw, Chief Executive, and her Purley 2 colleagues, the team also shared cinnamon buns as part of the traditional DAISY Award celebration.

Sister Esther was nominated by a patient's family member, who described her as "very calm, patient with good empathy" and praised her commitment to high standards of care. They also highlighted the way she supports student nurses through bedside teaching and the positive example she sets for her team.

💉 London’s Chief Nurse helps launch our staff flu vaccination campaign

We were delighted to welcome London’s Chief Nurse, Karen Bonner, to the Crystal Child Development Centre in Croydon, where she received her flu vaccination and helped mark the launch of this year’s staff flu vaccination campaign.

The vaccination was administered by our own Vaccination Nurse, Anne. During her visit, Karen also took time to speak with colleagues, hear about their experiences and thank them for the vital role they play in caring for our patients.

Karen is encouraging frontline NHS staff across London to get their flu vaccination as soon as they are eligible, helping to protect vulnerable patients, reduce staff sickness and support NHS services through the winter months.

Meet Dr Syed Shah, Specialty Doctor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, working across Croydon University Hospital and Queen Mary's Hospital.

Since beginning his UK dental career as a Senior House Officer, Dr Shah has continued to develop his clinical, surgical and leadership skills through the SAS doctor career pathway. Recently achieving Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons, he is gaining further expertise in wisdom tooth surgery and oral cancer procedures.

Dr Shah describes his journey as a SAS doctor as incredibly rewarding and remains passionate about continuing to grow professionally while delivering excellent care for patients.

We’re delighted to announce that Andrea Stewart  has been successfully appointed as our permanent Director of Communications and Fundraising, following a competitive recruitment process.

Having been part of Croydon Health Services for nearly 10 years, Andrea has already made a significant contribution to our organisation, most recently stepping into the Director of Communications and Fundraising role on an interim basis and we’re delighted to now welcome her into the role permanently.

Andrea said:
“I’m really happy to be taking on the role of Director of Communications and Fundraising on a permanent basis. Having spent the last nine years at Croydon Health Services, starting as a Communications Manager and working my way up within the team and I feel incredibly proud to be continuing that journey in this role.

I’m passionate about the difference great communications can make and the part our Charity plays in supporting both our staff and patients. I’m really looking forward to building on the progress we’ve already made, working with colleagues across the organisation and our partners, and bringing fresh energy and ambition to both communications and fundraising.”
