🌟 Axe Rivers Festival 🌟

The Rivers Run Through Us team kicked off this week long celebration of the Axe rivers with a wonderful nocturnal wonder along the river last night. What better way to celebrate Earth day than sharing the night with with foraging bats, herons going to roost and imagining the underwater wonders of the river at night. Thanks to all who joined us!
🦇
Thanks to Wild East Devon for the expert bat knowledge and of course our funders, The National Lottery Heritage Fund with thanks to National Lottery Players. Without which we wouldn’t be able to make events like this free and accessible.

We will take time to listen to the quiet sounds of the river, notice the shift in wildlife activity. With torches, we may glimpse fish moving silently through the shallows or catch flashes of other nocturnal creatures beginning their routes along the water’s edge. Ben Morgan-Brown, Nature Reserves Ranger, for East Devon, will join us as our guide for the evening.

Riverlandia unfolded- what's involved?
🩵
For the first event of Axe Rivers Festival, join Ellen Wiles- writer, multidisciplinary artist, musician and academic- as she describes the creative process behind the audio story of a young woman and a river, told by a host of human and non- human characters. The evening will include short clips from the story, interwoven with short intervals where the Rivers Run Through Us team will share their knowledge of some of the cast.
🩵
Sit back, relax and be transported to your favourite river by some of the UKs most iconic species.

For day two of Axe Rivers Festival 2026, join us for a screening of Balancing the Scales, a powerful and beautifully produced film from the Beaver Trust that follows the ecological, social and practical implications of bringing beavers back into our landscapes. The film delves into one of the most pressing ecological questions of our time: can beavers and migratory fish successfully coexist?
🦫
To open the event, we will welcome Dr Rob Needham, Restoration Manager at the Beaver Trust, who will give us a short introduction to the film. Following the film there will be opportunities to ask questions and discuss what a beaver-inclusive future might look like here.

Date: Tuesday 21st April 2026
Time: 19.00 - 21.30
Venue: Chard Guildhall

🩵
Enjoy breaks where we will share knowledge on some of the wildlife species narrated in the audio, and be welcomed by the creator herself; Ellen Wiles, who will introduce the evening and share her creative journey.
