🚨 CLOSE TO HOME: THE GROWING THREAT OF AI-GENERATED CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE
The findings behind The Survivors Trust’s “Close to Home” campaign should concern every one of us.
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly changing the nature of child sexual exploitation — and the scale of AI-generated abuse is growing at an alarming rate.
📊 In 2024, just 13 AI-generated child sexual abuse videos were identified.
📊 In 2025, that figure increased to 3,440.
That is an increase of more than 26,000% in just one year.
These aren't simply images on a screen. Behind every piece of abusive content is a child who deserves to be safe, protected and heard.
The Survivors Trust warns that AI-generated sexual abuse and exploitation is a growing threat, with devastating consequences for children and their families.
The campaign is a powerful reminder that child sexual abuse is not something that happens “somewhere else”. It can happen close to home, in our communities and increasingly online.
We need greater awareness, stronger prevention, better education and effective action to protect children from emerging forms of exploitation.
Alongside this, it is important to be aware of the risks associated with sharing photos of children on social media. Images posted online can be copied, reshared or scraped without consent, sometimes being used to train AI systems or create manipulated content. Even seemingly harmless posts can reveal personal details such as location, school uniforms or routines, which may be exploited by those with harmful intent. Being mindful of privacy settings and limiting what is shared can help reduce these risks and better protect children’s identities and safety.
