'A medieval mutilation'

08/06/2026

I recently had the privilege of attending the Kent Apprenticeship Awards 2026 for the first time, alongside Cllr Fordham, and what an inspiring evening it was.

KAA - https://www.ka-awards.co.uk/

I have always been passionate about apprenticeships because they offer something incredibly valuable. A chance for young people to gain skills, build confidence, earn while they learn and create a future for themselves. Not everyone wants to follow the traditional university route, and not everyone starts life with the same opportunities. Apprenticeships help level the playing field and open doors that might otherwise remain closed.

At a time when many young people are facing uncertainty about their future, rising costs and increasing pressures, it has never been more important that we invest in pathways that give them hope, purpose and opportunity. We owe it to the next generation to ensure they have every chance to succeed.

I also want to pay tribute to the fantastic businesses and employers across Kent who continue to invest in apprenticeships. Taking on an apprentice is about more than filling a role; it's about believing in someone's potential, nurturing talent and giving a young person that crucial first step on the career ladder. We need more businesses willing to do exactly that.

The future of our communities, our economy and our country depends on developing the skills and talents of the next generation. Apprenticeships are one of the best ways to make that happen.

Congratulations to all the winners, nominees and everyone involved in making the Kent Apprenticeship Awards 2026 such a memorable and uplifting event. You should all be incredibly proud. 👏🌟

Today, some of your Dartford Reform councillors had the privilege of spending the afternoon at Warren Court with residents, and former Mayor Peter Whapshott, to remember and celebrate those who took part in D-Day.

It was a fantastic afternoon, with wonderful entertainment from the Pearly Queen of Silvertown, some lovely food provided by local residents, and plenty of afternoon refreshments enjoyed by all.

Most importantly, it was an opportunity to reflect on the immense courage, sacrifice and determination shown by the D-Day generation. Their bravery helped secure the freedoms we enjoy today, and it is vital that we continue to remember and honour their service.

A massive thank you to all the residents at Warren Court for such a fantastic afternoon.

Lest we forget.

🌟 New vocational SEND centre opens at Parkwood Hall 🌟

I was delighted to help officially open the new Vocational Centre at Parkwood Hall Co‑operative Academy, a fantastic special school supporting children and young people with moderate to complex learning difficulties.
The centre includes a café, shop, nail bar and hair salon—carefully designed to reflect real working environments and give pupils meaningful, hands-on experiences.
It was a pleasure to meet Headteacher Simon Collins and his dedicated team, whose passion and commitment to their pupils is truly inspiring. The innovative initiatives they are delivering are making a real difference, helping young people develop practical skills, build confidence, and prepare for life beyond education.
Although he was unable to attend on the day,

At Kent County Council, through our Pathways for All approach, we are committed to supporting meaningful initiatives that provide better outcomes for young people , giving them the opportunity to explore different routes into employment and achieve their full potential.

A huge well done to everyone at Parkwood Hall for creating such a forward-thinking and supportive environment. 👏

Today we all at Dartford Reform remember the courage and sacrifice of the heroes who landed in Normandy 82 years ago.

Their sacrifice changed the course of history. Lest we forget. 🇬🇧
