Exciting times at the playground this week. Installation of the much anticipated basket swing has begun.

We are also using this opportunity to improve the drainage of the concrete play tunnels to prevent the build up of mud when it rains.

As a result some areas of the playground will be fenced off this week and contractors will be moving through the area however the unaffected equipment will be open as usual.

We had a visit to the Little Eaton Parish Council meeting on Wednesday 22nd July by representatives from Mercian Cycles who are now based on the village and planning their 80th anniversary celebrations. They informed us of their plans for the Festival of Steel which will take place on Sunday 16th August with a number of organised rides supported by Belper Bicycle Club.

The main event will commence around 12 noon, when the riders start to return from the four organized rides. Each ride start will be staggered, and broken down into groups of up to eight riders, to ensure that there is no mass exit onto adjoining roads. Please follow the attached link for further details:

You will be directed to the “Buy Tickets” page, but tickets are Free of Charge. The registration of riders is required to limit the numbers on each ride, and to hold a record of the riders registered to ride.

The first group(s) of riders will set of from 08:45, and returning riders are expected 12 noon onwards. Visitors are expected to come and go between the hours of 12:00 and 17:00. Many will arrive by bicycle, and car sharing will be encouraged for those arriving in vehicles.

This is an open event, and Free of Charge, to all. There will be a small number of select awards to the “Legends of Mercian”, which will take place when the majority of riders have returned, estimated time 14:00.

We are looking for enthusiastic, passionate, and dedicated people to join Little Eaton Parish Council. Your voice and your ideas are needed to help us successfully deliver some exciting local projects.

As a parish councillor, you will have the opportunity to:
* Drive Local Improvements: Directly influence key upcoming community projects, including the installation of a new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA).
* Champion Inclusivity: Help deliver vital facilities, such as the refurbishment of our public toilets and the addition of a new, fully accessible toilet.
*Support Local Sport: Help oversee the much-needed refurbishment of the sports pavilion for our local teams and residents.
*Represent Residents: Be the voice for your neighbours and ensure your community's needs are heard.

Am I eligible to apply?
To stand as a councillor, you must be 18 or older and a British, Commonwealth, or EU citizen. You must also be registered to vote in the parish, or have lived, worked, or owned property within 3 miles of the parish boundary for the last 12 months.

What is the commitment?
The council meets as a whole, one evening a month and in small groups on a more ad-hoc basis to lead local project working groups. It is a rewarding, volunteer role that allows you to leave a lasting, positive legacy in your local area.

Little Eaton Street Meet : Tue 14 Jul 14:00

Officers from the Ilkeston Rural Beat Safer Neighbourhood Team are holding a 'Street Meet' whilst on foot patrol on 14th July from 2pm.

The meet will take place around The Co-Op, Alfreton Road, Little Eaton and is intended to give residents a chance to speak to us about any local policing issues or concerns.

Come along and pick up advice on crime prevention and find out more information about keeping in touch with us through our free Derbyshire Alert messaging system.

LITTLE EATON W.I.

We are now getting into Summer programme and well into our Carnival preparation. Our members are getting creative with this year’s carnival float building, but we will keep you guessing to our theme! I hope you have also seen the post-box toppers which have been changing with the seasons and topical events.

Since the last newsletter went out, we celebrated our 104rd birthday and in April we presented Derbyshire Rural Chaplaincy with a cheque for £1500 from our fundraising. Thank you to our WI members who have raised this fantastic amount over the last year, fundraising at events we organise in the village which many of you attended, including our annual Quiz and Chips evening in November.

In May we hold our Annual Meeting and elect a new committee, but you can join us at any time throughout the year. If you would like to join a local ladies group for friendship, interesting speakers and other activities, please get in touch. You can just turn up to one of our evenings and pay a guest fee of £4 before deciding whether you would like to join.

Our reading group continues to meet in the Queens Head once a month, also an informal knit and natter group, cinema & theatre trips, meals out, craft evenings to name a few of our usual activities. Anything you wish to do,
we’ll do our best to organise it!

Visitors are made most welcome to join us and can become a member at any time through the year.

LITTLE EATON IN BLOOM
TIME FOR CHANGE

About 2011 the Chairman of East Midlands in Bloom passed by Croft Corner as a group of volunteers were helping to plant up a summer display sponsored by the Parish Council. He asked if we had ever thought about entering the competition. Blank looks all round! Fast forward to 2012, I started up a Gardening Club which was the right place to discuss the possibility of entering the competition.

Brenda Shore and I took on the task of organising a committee starting with a Chair Person, a Treasurer and a Secretary plus finding willing volunteers. Money had to be found and we did this with the help of Parish Council, the Produce Show, Carnival, Little Eaton Community Association, Fund raising and private donations.

In early 2014 we held our first committee meeting and started planning. We entered the competition that summer which earned us a Silver Medal. The years 2015 and 2016 took us up to the level of Silver Gilt medals. This took a lot of hard work by everyone, but so satisfying.

We then decided to concentrate our efforts in continuing to improve the look of our village. A restructure of the long bed at Croft Corner took place, more containers purchased or donated, more bulbs planted into verges and fresh displays organised for Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter.

As a committee, we feel it’s time to hand over to a new team and this will be led by Esther Jennison-Boyle who will be Chair Person. Many of our volunteers are still willing to help and it’s been a pleasure to have been part of the whole process.
Huge thanks to all who help in the village and a big thank you to Brenda Jennison who has been so helpful to our success.

I wish the new organisation all the best and look forward to seeing their fresh ideas come to fruition.

Our service of worship is each Sunday at 10.30 am & everyone is welcome.

‘Forget me nots’ continue to meet alternative Monday after noon at 2.00pm for games & chat to benefit those with memory loss, dementia or alzheimer’s.
