Fighting the Fly-Tipping Epidemic: Lib Dems Unveil Bold Plan to Clean Up Our Communities 🚮🌳✨

For too long, our local green spaces, quiet lanes, and urban corners have been treated as personal dumping grounds by criminals. 🚫🚜🛣️ As fly-tipping incidents across England surge to a staggering 1.26 million cases annually, the Liberal Democrats are stepping up with a common-sense, community-led solution to reclaim our environment. 🌍💪📢

At the heart of the party’s new environmental manifesto is a powerful incentive for justice: cash rewards of up to £5,000 for citizens who provide "tip-offs" leading to the successful prosecution of illegal dumpers. 💰🕵️‍♂️⚖️ By empowering "People of Binterest", vigilant neighbors who care about their local area, the Lib Dems aim to give council enforcement officers the ammunition they need to tackle this growing environmental emergency head-on. 👮‍♀️🚮👊

A "Polluter Pays" Approach 🏗️💸
The Liberal Democrats believe that the burden of waste management should shift from the taxpayer to the lawbreaker. 🔄🛑 Currently, massive clean-up operations; like the notorious 21,000 tonne tip in Oxfordshire, are costing the public millions. 🚛📉

To fund a cleaner Britain, the party proposes a fundamental shift in how we penalize and prevent waste crime:

Higher Stakes for Criminals: The minimum fine for fly-tipping would be hiked to £2,500, ensuring that the punishment finally fits the crime. ⚖️🔨🔥

Affordable Alternatives: Councils will be encouraged to cap "bulky waste" collection fees at just £5. By making responsible disposal affordable, we remove the excuse for illegal dumping. 🛋️✅💵

Self-Sustaining Funding: The revenue generated from increased fines would directly subsidise the low-cost collection services, creating a circular system of accountability. ♻️💷🔄

Why Now? ⏳❓
Government statistics reveal a worrying 9% increase in fly-tipping incidents over the last year alone. 📈😟 While the Environment Agency focuses on large-scale hazardous sites, local authorities are often left underfunded and overstretched, dealing with a £19.3 million bill for clearing up after criminals. 💸📉🏗️

"We are facing an epidemic of illegal waste, our communities deserve better than to see their parks and roadsides blighted by rubbish. By incentivizing the public to speak up and making it nearly free for households to do the right thing, we can end the culture of impunity that fly-tippers have enjoyed for too long." 🏞️🧼🙌

Investing in Our Local Environment 🌳💎
While some councils have experimented with small rewards for information, the Lib Dems’ proposed £5,000 bounty is a game-changer. 🎯🔥 It signals a serious commitment to environmental protection and local pride. 🇬🇧💚✨

As we head toward next month's local elections, the message is clear: the Liberal Democrats are the only party offering a proactive, well-funded strategy to clean up our streets and protect our natural world for the next generation. 🗳️🌿

🕊️ It’s time to stop the rot and start rewarding the citizens who help us keep our communities beautiful. 🌺🤝🧹

| Update at 17.30 on Sunday 29 March

Detectives investigating the incident at Friar Gate in Derby are urging anyone with footage that could help our inquiries to come forward.

Seven people were hospitalised when they were struck by a black Suzuki Swift, which was driven at them at about 9.30pm on Saturday 28 March.

Friar Gate was busy with revellers at the time and although some witnesses have already contacted us, we are now urging anyone who hasn’t yet done so to get in touch now.

In particular, we want to hear from anyone who has footage of the incident taking place.

We also want to hear from drivers who were in the area at the time and may have dashcam footage capturing the Suzuki Swift before or after.

It is thought that the suspect drove off along Friar Gate away from the city centre, towards Ashbourne Road, then onto Bridge Street, Lodge Lane towards Five Lamps, Garden Street and Duffield Road before going onto St Alkmund’s Way.

The visibly damaged vehicle was then safely stopped by police a short time later at Station Approach, on the way over to Pride Park.

If you have any mobile phone, dashcam or CCTV footage that could help, please contact us using one of the methods listed below.

The seven people suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries in the incident.

A 36-year-old man, who lives in Derby but is originally from India, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody for questioning.

Anyone with information that could help our officers with their investigation should contact us using one of the below methods, quoting incident 1131 of March 28:

The 26 Arriva bus service for Oakwood has deteriorated a lot in recent months - there has been a reduction in number of buses during the day, changes to the route, buses often not running to timetable and the removal of first the 23.10 and the the 22.40 service in the evenings. We now have a last bus at 21.40 which leaves people needing to get a taxi home after an evening event in the city.

A complaint was made to Arriva who responded 'Your comments have been forwarded onto our commercial team to review the service later in the year for viability to reinstate it.' If you have other or similar issues let Oakwood Liberal Democrats and Derby Liberal Democrats know and you can also complain on their website using this link: https://support.arrivabus.co.uk/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360000043809 to make your voice heard in the future planning for the route.
