Ed Davey and Campaigner Barry Holliday call on PM Burnham to end the “social care catastrophe” as 8,770 older residents in Derbyshire denied care last year

Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey and Derbyshire Dales Campaigner Barry Holliday warns Andy Burnham as he enters Number 10 that failure to act on social care reform will be “a catastrophe for families, for the NHS and for local services”.

The Liberal Democrats have set out three tests for Burnham on social care reforms. It follows the party leader making an open offer to the Labour leader to work together across party lines on the issue.

The tests come as new analysis by the party shows that 8,770 older people in Derbyshire were denied care in 2024/25, along with 5,690 disabled working age adults.

Meanwhile, House of Commons Library analysis commissioned by the party shows that across the country there has been an eyewatering rise in family care costs, with individual contributions to local authority social care rising 60% between 2020/21 and 2024/25, from £2.93bn to £4.68bn.

The Liberal Democrat tests for reforms to end the social care crisis are:

1. Put family carers front and centre with guaranteed rights for every carer, including respite care and a full replacement of the broken carers allowance so that families can afford to care.
2. A universal safety net of care, including free personal care.
3. Protect people from catastrophic costs so no family sees their finances devastated by care needs.

There has been a major knock on effect on the NHS from the crisis, with record numbers now stuck in hospital who are medically fit to be discharged.
Party analysis has found that a record 2.46m hospital bed days have been lost to delayed discharges so far in 2026, higher than the equivalent period for any previous year.

Liberal Democrat Campaigner, Barry Holliday said:
“Out speaking to local people it is heartbreaking to meet families who have lost everything to care costs, or who have been left isolated and unsupported without the care they need.

“The crisis in social care is a millstone round the neck of our community. It’s clobbering families in Derbyshire, squeezing budgets for our local council services and undermining our NHS. Andy Burnham must work with local government and the NHS to finally deliver change.

“People in Derbyshire deserve better. From pensioners left bedbound to life savings being spent on dementia care, our system better resembles the 1920s than the 2020s. By guaranteeing a minimum level of care, protecting families from crippling costs and supporting family carers we can end this appalling crisis.”

Detectives investigating the incident at Friar Gate in Derby are urging anyone with footage that could help our inquiries to come forward.

Seven people were hospitalised when they were struck by a black Suzuki Swift, which was driven at them at about 9.30pm on Saturday 28 March.

Friar Gate was busy with revellers at the time and although some witnesses have already contacted us, we are now urging anyone who hasn’t yet done so to get in touch now.

In particular, we want to hear from anyone who has footage of the incident taking place.

We also want to hear from drivers who were in the area at the time and may have dashcam footage capturing the Suzuki Swift before or after.

It is thought that the suspect drove off along Friar Gate away from the city centre, towards Ashbourne Road, then onto Bridge Street, Lodge Lane towards Five Lamps, Garden Street and Duffield Road before going onto St Alkmund’s Way.

The visibly damaged vehicle was then safely stopped by police a short time later at Station Approach, on the way over to Pride Park.

The seven people suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries in the incident.

A 36-year-old man, who lives in Derby but is originally from India, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody for questioning.

The 26 Arriva bus service for Oakwood has deteriorated a lot in recent months - there has been a reduction in number of buses during the day, changes to the route, buses often not running to timetable and the removal of first the 23.10 and the the 22.40 service in the evenings. We now have a last bus at 21.40 which leaves people needing to get a taxi home after an evening event in the city.

A complaint was made to Arriva who responded 'Your comments have been forwarded onto our commercial team to review the service later in the year for viability to reinstate it.'
