* Today we share an image of a touring car in Shipquay Street, 1931. In the background is the famous Phillip’s music shop in Beethoven House. It was established by noted impresario H B Phillips who came to Derry in 1876 as a cathedral chorister and later managed the opera house. He attracted many stars to perform in the city incl Paul Robeson, Caruso and John McCormack. The shop closed about 1980. On right is the Palace, a cinema opened here in a converted shop in 1912 & by 1930s, could seat 800. Who recalls Phillip’s or the Palace? Do share in the comments!

* Today we sahre an image from the US navy from 1942, with a view across the Foyle. Foyle Road is prominent, with much Great Northern Railway rolling stock, and what appears to be a white plume of smoke from a train. Can anyone see the rail goods store, loco shed, water tanks & signal cabins?

From left is the Star factory, Moat St, Ferguson St and Bennett St. St Columb’s cathedral stands tall on the skyline. What other old buildings can be spotted in the image? Do share in the comments.
