🚨 ONCOMING CARS FLASHING THEIR LIGHTS AT YOU… BUT WHY?! 🚨
You’re driving along and suddenly an oncoming driver flashes their headlights at you. 👀💡
Would you know why they were flashing? And more importantly… would you know how to react?
The Highway Code states that a flash of the lights should only be used as per the horn 📢 to alert other road users to your presence. It states that using it for anything else can cause confusion.
However, a quick flash can be a warning that something is happening ahead that you need to be aware of. It doesn’t necessarily mean “you can go” or “thanks!” — context is EVERYTHING.
They could be warning you about:
🚗 An accident or obstruction ahead – there may be a collision, broken-down vehicle or something blocking the road.
⚠️ A hazard in the road – potholes, debris, fallen branches, loose materials or something else you need to avoid.
🐕 Animals in or near the road – perhaps livestock, a dog, horse or wildlife has entered the carriageway.
🚶♀️ Pedestrians or cyclists – particularly if they’re somewhere you wouldn’t normally expect them.
🚔 A hazard or incident around a bend – the other driver may have seen something you can’t yet see.
🌊 Flooding or poor road conditions – water, ice, mud or other conditions could make the road particularly hazardous.
🚨 Emergency situation ahead – there could be emergency vehicles, roadworks or an incident requiring extra caution.
🚘 Are you driving with lights turned on? Could they be trying to tell you, one of them isn’t working properly, or they’re turned on when they maybe shouldn’t be 🤷🏼♀️
So what should YOU do?
👉 DON’T immediately assume you know what they’re warning you about or assume because you can’t see the reason immediately there’s nothing to worry about.
Instead, slow down, increase your observation and be prepared to stop. Look well ahead and check your surroundings. The hazard may not be immediately obvious. If you can’t see anything, check your vehicle when you get home, check your lights are working and everything is secure.
And remember… a flash of headlights is not an instruction to proceed. It is simply information from another road user. YOU still need to make your own safe decision.
💡 Driving is about more than just knowing the Highway Code — it’s about reading what’s happening around you and knowing other drivers intentions.
