Another litter of hoglets has come in this evening from a nest disturbance - no sign of mum, so the hoglets were brought in to us.

All male and weighing between 31g and 51g. All have had a feed of formula and are now in a food coma in one of our incubators.

We are going through an awful lot of formula, even though we buy it by the bucket, along with cotton buds, cotton pads and kitchen roll.

Little 261g Male hoglet Benson came in yesterday after being found out wandering alone in a garden yesterday afternoon. His front right leg was swollen, so off to the vets he went.

He now has his leg splinted, and is sporting a fetching red bandage. The bulk doesn't seem to worry him too much as he is tucking into his food just fine.

He has to go back to the vets in 3 weeks time for follow up, but as he is a youngster we are hoping he will heal just fine.

Interested in helping the University of Reading with citizen-science projects exploring how urban hedgehogs might be exposed to rodenticides in residential gardens?

Volunteers will be asked to complete a short survey about their garden, including features such as house type, bird feeders and wildlife feeding. The survey is planned to run between July and August, and volunteers can take part at any time during this period.

You will need access to a garden and a motion-activated wildlife or security camera.

*** Update - Sadly this hog had to be put to sleep, the netting had cut entirely through the muscles and nerves of the leg, making it useless, and it was badly necrotic. Hedgehogs cannot manage with just one front leg, and with the advanced infection it was sadly euthanised.

Another hedgehog brought in this morning that had been trapped in netting. He has some nasty injuries where the netting has cut into his skin, and the wounds are infected.

His left front leg has a really nasty cut and the upper part of the leg is badly swollen.

He is currently receiving treatment at the vets.

The hoglets just keep on coming - this litter of seven hoglets, some with their spikes still coming through, were found in a garden inside a black bag. Luckily mum was with them so Tracy dashed over to pick them up and brought them back to the rescue.

Mum is astonishingly big at 1370g after giving birth to seven babies.
