Last night, we welcomed Lulworth Coastguard Rescue Team & 1 CRO from Lyme Regis Coastguard for a water rescue training session alongside our Sector Coastal Operations Officer (SCOO) and Coastal Operations Officer (COO). HM Coastguard - Dorset, Hampshire & Isle of Wight

The teams practised a range of water rescue techniques, including wedge & huddle drills, tethered swims, and continuous loop rescues, helping to maintain and develop vital operational skills.

These are core competencies for all Coastguard Rescue Officers, and every Coastguard rescue vehicle is equipped with specialist water rescue equipment, ready for when it’s needed most.

We also had a surprise visit from one of the local seals, who seemed just as interested in the training as we were! 🦭

Today we commemorate 82 years since the D-Day landings, the historic Allied invasion of Normandy during the Second World War and still recognised as the largest seaborne invasion in history.

The success of D‑Day played a crucial part in securing protection from invasion and we will never forget the sacrifices of those who gave their service across our nation.

It’s been busy for the team recently in the last week the team have attended 8 incidents within the local area.

📍 Worbarrow Bay

Team tasked to Worbarrow Bay to locate a large ammo round.

On arrival the team met with range wardens at the Tyneham carpark and made their way down to the beach.

Luckily the first informant had stayed on scene and showed the location of the ordnance as the tide was now in and the object now under water.

A small cordon was set around the area to prevent anyone swimming or walking into the water near the object and one CRO was made ready for entering the water with a dry suit and PFD (personal flotation device)

A water proof camera was used to take pictures from a distance pictures were then checked it was soon apparent that the object was non explosive.

The object was then removed from its location to prevent further callouts in the future.

Thank you to the first informant for all the help in showing us the location of the object.

📍 Poole

Team tasked to assist Poole Coastguard Rescue Team with an incident in their operational area.

After a few hours being out the team returned to station at 1:45am.

Taking a dip in the sea on a hot day? ⛱️

Don’t be fooled, just because it’s sunny doesn’t mean the water is warm.

Entering cold water, whether deliberately or accidentally, can cause cold water shock.

When this happens, you may gasp involuntarily, followed by rapid breathing that can be very difficult to control. This can increase the risk of inhaling water and drowning.

Never jump straight in. Instead, enter the water slowly to help your body adjust, and avoid swimming alone. Wearing a wetsuit can also help by improving buoyancy and reducing the effects of cold water.

Don’t forget to have warm clothes ready for when you come back to shore.

In an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

With the weather warming up take a minute to think is tombstoning worth the risk 🚫

Jumping or diving from piers, cliffs, jetties, or bridges can cause serious injury or be fatal.

Submerged rocks, shallow water and strong currents aren’t always visible. Once you’re in the water, getting out can be difficult.

Instead, choose a registered coasteering provider, where you’ll have the right training and equipment for a safe, enjoyable experience ✅

In an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

📍 Mupe Bay

Kimmeridge CRT were tasked alongside Lulworth Coastguard Rescue Team to a potential unexploded device on the beach at Mupe Bay.

Arriving on scene teams located the device and set up a perimeter to divert any walkers away from the beach for safety. We had some help setting up a perimeter on the water with our newest member of the team HMCG seal team. EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) were contacted and on their arrival they confirmed it was a dud. It was removed from the beach and the beach re opened to the public and teams where stood down.

A big thank you to the Range Officer from Lulworth Camp for allowing access through the camp and coordinating with us, the police, and EOD.
