Labour call for action on dangerous East Boldon steps

Labour has called on the Stonegate Group to install a handrail at the steps leadingfrom the Grey Horse Car Park into North Lane, East Boldon, to make them safer to use.

John Temple, Labour candidate for Cleadon Village and East Boldon said, “A number of weeks ago, an accident occurred involving a fall from the steps and the person concerned required hospital treatment as a result of injuries sustained in the
fall.” He continued, “The steps are used by parents, carers and children going to nearby East Boldon Junior School and Helen Gibson Nursery, and as owners of the land, I have formally requested Stonegate to install a handrail to the steps to make
them safer to use.”

His Labour colleague, Tina Roche said, “John and I have visited the site and we
implore Stonegate take urgent action to enhance the safety of these well used
steps.”

Concern over spate of burglaries in East Boldon.

Labour candidates Dr John Temple and Ms Tina Roche have promised to intervene, following reports of a spate of house burglaries in East Boldon.
Tina Roche said: “ An issue that was raised with us whilst out campaigning recently was concern over the number of burglaries, especially garage break-in's that are occurring in certain parts of East Boldon.” Tina continued, “Many residents feel that properties are being targeted, and it would seem that thieves are looking for expensive bikes and other equipment that they can sell-on easily.”

John Temple said: ' It is an extremely frightening experience to have your home burgled. Indeed, it is much more than the loss of valuables that is very distressing.” John continued, “We have undertaken to raise the matter with the South Tyneside Divisional Police Command, and at our invitation, Susan Dungworth, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Northumbria, today visited East Boldon where we were able to speak with her about how the issue is affecting people in the village.”
The local Labour Party will also raise the matter at the next meeting of the West Shields , Cleadon and East Boldon Community Area Forum, following the local elections, where representatives of Northumbria Police are present.
John and Tina said, “Residents need to be given assurances, especially those who are elderly or live on their own, that steps are being taken to address genuine concerns.”

Yes! thanks for standing against Avant’s attempt to vary agreed conditions

Concerns raised by Labour at developers’ application to vary planning
conditions at East Boldon housing site
Dr John Temple and Ms Tina Roche, the Labour Party candidates for Cleadon
Village and East Boldon, have formally written to South Tyneside Council’s Planning
Department raising concerns about Avant Homes’ application to amend the recently
agreed planning conditions (that were confirmed by the planning inspectorate), on
the development comprising 202 homes at Cleadon Lane, East Boldon.
Amongst the conditions Avant wishes to vary include, delaying (to nearer the end of
the phased development programme) the construction of the footpath link leading
from the development to East Boldon metro station and the local shops, via the
bridleway which runs behind the site.
John Temple commented: ‘’I have a number of concerns over this request, but this
particular issue is difficult to understand from the perspective of someone buying a
property. Currently the path will not be constructed until well after the completion of
115 dwellings in Phase 1. To delay it even further seems ridiculous and will cause
residents tremendous inconvenience”.
Tina Roche pointed out that until the path was built residents would have to leave the
site via Cleadon Lane and walk a much further distance along, what is a busy road.
Tina commented, ‘’At a time when we are supposed to be encouraging people to
walk and leave their cars at home, this request to vary the conditions does not help
anyone other than the contractor’’.

Calls for rural style footpath link receives support from Labour
Calls for a footpath on Moor Lane, linking Cleadon to East Boldon metro station and
local shops, have been supported by John Temple and Tina Roche, Labour
candidates for Cleadon Village and East Boldon.
John Temple said, “A number of residents living at Broadlands, Cleadon, have told
us how dangerous Moor Lane is and that improvements are needed to make it safer
for pedestrians. We think a footpath could be constructed in a way that would fit in
with the rural nature of the landscape and not detrimentally affect the wildlife
habitat’’.
Tina Roche commented, “If the draft Local Plan is approved, the proposed
development near to Broadlands will result in increased traffic and even greater use
by pedestrians. We believe the Council should require the developer of that site to
make a contribution so that suitable footpath improvements are made’’. She
continued, ‘’The local Labour Party was the only political party to speak up about this
site at the Local Plan inquiry, raising the issues of traffic and the loss of green belt. It
seems a nonsense for improvements to Moor Lane not to be required as part of the
work if it goes ahead’’.
In conclusion, John Temple said, “If we can create a safe active travel route along
Moor Lane, we would promote more healthy lifestyles and encourage increased use
of the metro system. Surely, that must be a win-win’’!

Labour welcomes road safety initiative at East Boldon School

A scheme to improve the road safety of pupils attending East Boldon Junior School,
was today welcomed by Dr John Temple and Ms Tina Roche, Labour candidates for
Cleadon Village and East Boldon.
Concerns had been raised about road safety and traffic management issues at the
entrance to the school on North Lane, East Boldon, where inappropriate car parking
and vehicle manoeuvrings regularly take place, compromising the safety of pupils
and their carers.
John Temple said, “I welcome this scheme that involves the provision of enhanced
yellow lineage, prohibiting vehicles parking, stopping and waiting at the entrance to
the school”. He continued, “The er****on of safety barriers immediately outside the
school’s main pedestrian and vehicular access, together with additional signage will
further enhance pedestrian safety”.
In welcoming the scheme, Tina Roche said, “I am delighted work has now started on
the scheme and pleased that the school, alongside South Tyneside Council, have
worked together to delver this important initiative”.
