Road Repairs.
Firstly this one at the New Cross will be done and I'm just trying finalise a date with NCC to try and get it done as soon as possible.
It's not a straight forward one as this is a major bus route and traffic route so at least part of the road will be down to single lane and temporary lights in action.
The other big pothole just a bit further up will be fixed today.
I will always be honest with you about the state of our roads in Ashfield, they are shocking.
Why are they so bad?
Many reasons but firstly all the roads in Nottinghamshire have not had the investment needed over the past 25 years to keep them up to standard. This is one of the reasons why I campaigned and was successful in stopping HS2 coming through Ashfield. The money should be spent on our roads.
Our close proximity to J27 & J28 of the M1 means we get millions of more vehicles each year travelling on our roads as we are a link to other areas and industrial sites if you are leaving the M1 at J27 or J28.
Since last May Reform UK led NCC have rewritten the rules on our roads by having a complete review on how we repair our roads.
Here's the facts - our roads have gotten so bad in Nottinghamshire that we need over £500 million to repair them to a satisfactory standard. This is a lot of money especially when you consider NCC currently get around £50 million a year to spend on our roads. Solutions? We must work smarter and try and get more money from central government and the East Midlands Mayor. I met with the East Midlands Mayor last year and she asked me what she could do for my area - I said give us some money for our roads. And fair play she has given NCC an extra £8 million but that won't get very far.
To put things into perspective over the past couple of years I personally got involved and secured the repairs of Diamond Avenue and Derby Rd in Kirkby. The A38 junction at Huthwaite, Blackwell Rd junction with Columbia Street in Huthwaite and Chesterfield Road in Huthwaite. These resurfaces would have cost NCC close to £2 million which is a big chunk out of the allocation we get.
But we must work smarter which is why I am working closely with NCC and will be meeting our County Councillors again this week to discuss our roads and ongoing repairs.
Next month I am visiting JCB with the leader of NCC to look at their pothole repair machines. If we like what we see, we will get a couple for our roads. I think this is a positive step forward as similar machines are now being used in Lancashire.
So in conclusion our roads are awful, and I will work with NCC to ensure Ashfield gets its fair share of funding under this new administration - trust me it will.
Keep reporting the potholes to me on [email protected] or to your local County Councillors.
