Press Release - Update on the refurbishment of Pevensey Sport Pavilion ⚽️🏏🏗️

Pevensey Parish Council (PPC) and the Pevensey and Westham sports club are pleased to announce an ambitious project to refurbish and modernise the Sports Pavilion at Pevensey Recreation Ground, ensuring it remains a vibrant and valued asset for the community for decades to come.

The pavilion was built in the 1970’s and currently hosts approximately 480 sporting members. This comprises of three sporting sections, Pevensey and Westham Football Club, Pevensey Cricket Club and the Pevensey Rookies Stoolball club. The sheer number of physical activity hours undertaken by all ages and genders demonstrates the commitment, benefits and need to have this well-loved community asset.

The works required.
The existing pavilion has reached a point where significant upgrades are required to meet modern standards. The project aims to tackle urgent repairs and refurbishment that include, removing the roof and re-roofing, external refurbishment of the existing building, remodeling of the interior, interior fit out, including the installation of disabled facilities and access and associated external works, drainage and utility connections. The cost for the refurbishment is £459,875

In addition to the building costs, PPC appointed a number of professional companies, which the council has paid for and is in the region of £40,000. Throughout this process PPC has succeeded in obtaining planning permission for the refurbishment; completed the governmental formal tender/procurement process and appointed a contractor. The contractor appointed was Hawes Construction Group.

PPC is currently working actively to secure funding from various sources. PPC is very grateful to have received successfuls bid from the John Jackson Charitable Trust (£68,449) and the Football foundation (£25,000). Other applications for funding are being submitted from bodies such as Wealden’s District Council and Suez Landfill Trust. PPC already spent in excess of £40,000 and has committed a further £75,000 from reserves to meet match funding requirements for current grant applications.

How to Support
The sports club is also launching a public fundraising campaigns. The Pevensey and Westham football club have successfully raised £5,000 from a sponsored colour run which took place at the Pevensey Recreation Ground. Each individual football team has also set fundraising goals which include sponsored walks and running quizzes. The Pevensey cricket club are saving from match fees, arranging various fundraising events from quizzes, race nights and are having a charity game at the end of the season.
The club has created a dedicated just giving page, inviting local businesses and residents to support the project.

🌊 Beach investigations starting soon 🌊

We’re getting ready to start beach investigations along the Eastbourne to Pevensey Bay coastline. Today, we’ve been setting up a temporary compound at Sovereign West car park, with the team on site over the coming week preparing for the works.

Investigations are set to begin next week and will involve inspecting flood defences below the surface and assessing ground conditions to help inform future refurbishment and maintenance.

🕒 Working hours: Monday to Friday, 7:30am–5:30pm
✅ Seafront access will remain open as normal

🚧📅🚫IMPORTANT ROADWORKS INFORMATION from East Sussex Highways - Eastbourne Road & Richmond Road, Pevensey - Monday 1st June to Saturday 13th June - 8pm to 5am week nights only

Balfour Beatty will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing and patching works on Eastbourne Road and Richmond Road, Pevensey, to improve the overall condition of the road.

When do they start?
Works will be carried out from Monday 1 June to Saturday 13 June 2026, 8pm – 5am, week nights only. Any changes to the dates or times via advanced warning signs on site.

How will this impact highway users?
They will be working in multiple locations:

Eastbourne Road:
• Monday 1 – Saturday 6 June 2026. From 10 metres Northeast of Richmond Road to 10 metres past Bay Road. The road will be closed to traffic while we are working, with a signed diversion route in place via the A259, the A27, the A22, the A2290 and vice versa.

• Monday 8 – Saturday 13 June 2026. From outside 40 to Richmond Road junction. There will be a ban of right hand turn to facilitate the road closure on Richmond Road.

Collier Road:
• Wednesday 3 – Friday 5 June 2026. From the A259 to The Promenade. The road will be closed to traffic while we are working.

Richmond Road:
• Monday 1 – Saturday 6 June 2026. At the junction with Eastbourne Road. There will be a lane closure in place.

• Monday 8 – Saturday 13 June 2026. 10 metres from the junction of Eastbourne Road to Wallsend Rd. The road will be closed to traffic while we are working, with a signed diversion route in place via the A259, the A27, the A22, the A2290 and vice versa.

For safety, access to properties within the works area will need to be limited and managed during our working hours. If you need access, please speak to the team on site, as arrangements and routes may change as work progresses. There could also be a delay while the area is made safe for you to pass, and your vehicle may be escorted by site marshalls. This is for properties with direct access within the closure area only and there will be no through route.

Information for residents and businesses
Parking: If required, we will put out ‘no parking’ signs and cones on the site to advise where parking is restricted. Please avoid parking in these locations as it will delay our works.
