There’s a lot to think about when opening a new business.

But there’s one thing that shouldn’t be left until opening day — fire safety.

Before you open the doors, ask yourself:

🔥 Have you completed a suitable and sufficient Fire Risk Assessment?

🚪 Can everyone escape safely if there is a fire?

🚨 Are your fire detection and alarm arrangements appropriate for the premises?

Do you know how to use a fire extinguisher?

In the event of a small, developing fire, knowing what to do can make a real difference.

A simple way to remember the basic sequence is PASS:

🔴 P – PULL
Pull the safety pin to unlock the extinguisher.

🔴 A – AIM
Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, rather than the flames.

🔴 S – SQUEEZE
Squeeze the handle to discharge the extinguishing agent.

🔴 S – SWEEP
Sweep the nozzle from side to side across the base of the fire.

⚠️ But remember…

A fire extinguisher should only be used when it is appropriate for the type of fire, you have been appropriately trained/instructed, the fire is small and manageable, and you have a safe escape route behind you.

Never put yourself at unnecessary risk. If in doubt, evacuate, raise the alarm and call 999.

For businesses, having the right extinguishers isn’t simply about having one on the wall. Their type, suitability, location, accessibility and maintenance should all form part of your fire safety arrangements.
