Edinburgh families are already feeling the squeeze — so why are most parties on the Council backing a 5–6% Council Tax hike?

Edinburgh’s Conservative Group has put forward a 2.5% increase — the lowest of any party on the City of Edinburgh Council and below the current rate of inflation.

That means a real-terms reduction, while still protecting the frontline services residents rely on.

Our alternative budget also includes:
✔️ A dedicated fund to remove graffiti from heritage sites like the Union Canal
✔️ More investment in road and pavement repairs
✔️ A new Pest and Vermin Taskforce
✔️ Protection for key local services

While Labour, the SNP and Lib Dems back 5%, and the Greens propose 6%, Conservatives believe you can live within your means, protect services, and give residents a fair deal.

With over 250,000 households in Edinburgh, even a small difference makes a big impact.

John Swinney has already clobbered Scots with the highest taxes in the UK. Now he’s planning to pile on even more pain by forcing you into a higher council tax band.

Today, the Scottish Conservatives are leading a debate against the SNP’s proposals to reform council tax, which risk shifting even more pressure onto families and councils at a time when both are already under severe strain.

The SNP can’t be trusted to reshape the tax system, because every time they tinker with it, Scots end up paying more and getting less.
