Forth District Salmon Fishery Board The Forth District Salmon Fishery Board was established under the 1862 and 1868 Salmon Fisheries Legislation.

The Forth District Salmon Fishery Board was established under the 1862 and 1868 Salmon Fisheries Legislation, then subsequently amended in the Salmon Act 1986 and the Salmon Conservation (Scotland) Act 2001. This legislation has been recently amalgamated under the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries (Consolidation) (Scotland) Act 2003. The Board is empowered under legislation to take such acts as it c

onsiders expedient for the protection, enhancement and conservation of stocks of Salmon and Sea Trout. It also has a duty to ensure the general protection and enhancements of the fishery. The Board is responsible for more than 3,600 km2 of water within the district, the area not only includes the mainstem of the River Forth, the estuary and coast, but also the tributaries. These include, but not limited to: Allan, Almond, Avon, Bannockburn, Carron, Devon, Esk, Leny, Leven, Teith, Tyne, Water of Leith

Amend Schedule 2.1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to list cormorants, goosanders and red-breasted mergansers that they may be managed, enabling proportionate control to protect inland fisheries and migratory fish populations where serious damage is evidenced.

Conservation of salmon - 2027 assessment

The consultation has opened regarding the proposed status of salmon fisheries for the 2027 season.
The River Forth (including the Allan Water) and the River Teith are proposed to be downgraded to poor or category 3. This means all salmon caught in the Forth District will be subject to mandatory catch and release.
If you wish to submit a view on the proposals you can do so through the SG consultation hub (https://consult.gov.scot/marine-scotland/salmon-fishing-proposed-status-2027-season/), or by contacting [email protected] by the 4th September.

Forth District Salmon Fishery Board baliffs removed a net which had been set on the river Tyne near Haddington last night. On recovery of the net, 6 sea trout were found dead after being trapped in the net by their gill's. This type of fishing not only is illegal but also causes concern to other wildlife using the river system, including dogs looking to cool down on a hot day.
Should a net be spotted in the river or on the bank please contact Police Scotland on 101 or contact the Fishery board Superintendent on 07887 835549.

Wildlife Police Scotland, out patrolling the Forth estuary looking for illegal netting activity alongside the District board bailiffs. This information exchange and continued joint patrols, helps protect the salmon allowing them to migrate to their respective spawning rivers.
