WHAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW OF GENITICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISM (GMO) AND NIGERIA
Nigeria developed and approved GMO cowpea (widely called beans locally), Therefore you have been consuming GM beans
in Nigeria since 2020
It was called Pod Borer Resistant (PBR) / Bt Cowpea — variety SAMPEA 20‑T — developed by Nigerian scientists at IAR, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, with partners. Approved for commercial release Dec 2019, and Nigeria became the first country in the world to launch GM cowpea.
Advantages
- Resists the destructive Maruca pod borer; cuts pesticide use and raises yields significantly.
- The Second‑generation improved versions are still in trials.
- There is no officially approved GMO “common beans” (like white/brown kidney beans, Phaseolus vulgaris) in Nigeria — only improved conventional varieties exist.
- Research on GM traits for other legumes is ongoing but not yet commercial.
The summary is that GMO cowpea/beans has been in the market but there are not yet other varieties Modified .
NB Cowpea is the other name for the beans you know i.e black eyed beans .
