💧 THAMES WATER UPDATE – BURST WATER MAIN 1 September, 11:45am

A further update from Thames Water on the ongoing repair work.
Teams are making good progress and the necessary excavations have now been completed. The next stage will involve cutting out the damaged section of the water main and replacing it, which Thames Water hopes to complete by the end of today.

Once the new section is in place, water will gradually be reintroduced into the pipe and checks carried out to ensure the supply meets the required standards.

Following completion of the repair, work will begin to reinstate the road and return the surrounding area to normal. Thames Water currently expects this work to be completed and its teams to have left the area by the end of the week.

🚧 Traffic management and local diversions remain in place while the work continues. Please follow the diversion signs and allow extra time if you are travelling through the area.

I know how disruptive this incident has been for local residents and those travelling through the area, and I will continue to keep residents updated as the work progresses.

🏛️ NEW FUNDING TO PROTECT OUR LOCAL HERITAGE

Enfield North has a rich history, and I want to make sure our historic buildings are protected for generations to come.

The Government-backed Heritage at Risk Capital Fund has now opened its latest round of funding, with grants available to help repair and conserve historic buildings and sites at risk.

The fund, delivered by Historic England and backed by up to £75 million of Government investment, can support urgent repairs, conservation work and improvements which help historic buildings find a sustainable future.

This could be particularly important for heritage organisations, charities, community groups and others working to protect historic places here in Enfield North and across our borough.

Funding can support work including:
🏗️ Urgent structural repairs
🏛️ Conservation of historic buildings
📋 Surveys, feasibility studies and professional fees
♿ Accessibility improvements
🔨 Adaptations to bring historic buildings back into community or sustainable use

I would really encourage eligible organisations in Enfield North to take a look and consider whether there are local buildings or heritage assets which could benefit.

⏰ Expressions of Interest for Round 2 must be submitted by 5pm on Friday 18 September 2026.

The first year of the fund invested £15 million in projects across England, with up to £60 million still available over the next four years to 2030.

Protecting our heritage isn't simply about preserving the past. Done well, it can breathe new life into buildings, strengthen our communities, support jobs and skills and ensure important local places have a future.

💧 Water supply issues in EN2

I’m aware of the Thames Water incident affecting Bincote Road and the surrounding EN2 area this morning.

I know how disruptive and worrying problems with water supplies can be for residents, particularly following the serious disruption we experienced across Enfield earlier this month.

I am monitoring the situation closely and will remain in contact with Thames Water to ensure the issue is resolved as quickly as possible and that residents are kept properly informed.

I am so sad to read this. I had the privilege of meeting Don at our Enfield Armed Forces Day in June.

My deepest condolences are with Don’s family, friends and all who knew him. His courage, sacrifice and story must never be forgotten.

May he rest in peace.

We will remember them.

Remembering Don Howkins

Everyone at the Enfield Branch of the Royal British Legion was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Enfield resident and D-Day veteran Don Howkins, aged 105.

Don was a remarkable man who represented a generation that served and sacrificed for our country during some of the most difficult days in our history. We were honoured that Don was a special guest at our recent Armed Forces Day event, where it was a privilege to spend time with him and recognise his service.

With only a handful of D-Day veterans now remaining, Don’s passing is a poignant reminder of how important it is that we continue to remember those who served their country, and ensure their courage, sacrifice and stories are never forgotten.

Our deepest condolences go to Don’s family and friends. Our thoughts are with everyone who knew him at this very sad time.

📢 IMPORTANT FREEDOM PASS UPDATE

The Freedom Pass online portal will be temporarily unavailable from 5pm on Monday 31 August until 9am on Tuesday 15 September while London Councils transfers 1.5 million customer records to a new, improved system.

✅ Existing Freedom Passes will continue to work normally.

✅ There is no change to anyone’s entitlement or travel benefits.

During the temporary closure:

Online applications will not be available.
Paper applications for an Older Person’s Freedom Pass can still be submitted.
Disabled Person’s Freedom Pass applications should continue through Enfield Council.
Lost or damaged passes cannot be replaced until the service reopens. Replacement requests will then be prioritised and passes sent by first-class post.

There is also an important change for 60+ Oyster photocard holders: these will no longer transfer automatically to an Older Person’s Freedom Pass. You must now apply separately when you become eligible.

If possible, please apply, request a replacement or update your details before 5pm on Monday 31 August.

The upgraded service should make it quicker and easier to apply online and track applications.

🏠 GREAT NEWS FOR ENFIELD NORTH

The Labour Government has confirmed £3.3 billion for social and affordable housing in London between 2026 and 2030, putting the capital on track to receive a record £11.7 billion over the full ten-year programme.

Following this announcement, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan will initially allocate more than £6 billion to housing projects across the capital. Seventy per cent will support social housing, with 60% delivered by councils.

This investment could make a real difference for families in Enfield North: helping people move out of temporary accommodation, reducing housing waiting lists and providing more secure, genuinely affordable homes.

Everyone deserves a safe and permanent place to call home. I will continue pressing to ensure Enfield receives its fair share of this record investment.

⚠️ Severe weather warning for London

From 3am tomorrow, London is at risk of severe flash flooding as intense downpours are forecast across the capital.

Up to 50mm of rain could fall in just a few hours, almost as much as London would normally expect across the whole of August.

Please take care, particularly if travelling, and keep an eye on weather and travel updates.

It was great to be at Oasis Academy on GCSE results day. Huge congratulations to all of the students and staff!

Exams and revision have changed a lot since I was at school. One of the key takeaways from the visit was the contribution made by digital content creators like Learn French With Alexa. Alexa’s content has supported thousands of students with revision for their French exams, allowing them to learn at their own pace in a way that suits them.

🚯 Cracking down on fly-tipping

Fly-tipping is a problem across Enfield North, blighting our streets and leaving residents to pick up the bill. And we've seen our fair sharing of industrial fly-tipping in the Whitewebbs area.

So I welcome the Labour Government’s new crackdown on waste crime, including fines of up to £5,000, greater involvement from the police and National Crime Agency, and proposals to make fly-tippers complete up to 20 hours of unpaid clean-up work and repay the cost of clearing their waste.

There will also be stronger powers to seize assets bought through the proceeds of waste crime.

I want to see these new measures used to catch offenders and help keep Enfield North clean. We deserve streets and neighbourhoods we can be proud of.
