Fore Street: Exeter’s Forgotten Gem

Fore Street should be one of Exeter’s proudest streets, full of independent businesses, creativity, and history. But instead of being celebrated, it’s been left to fall by the wayside.

Over the last few weeks, Labour candidates and our MP have been out and about pointing at potholes — but have they even bothered to count the ones on Fore Street? On just a short walk, I spotted 19 issues: cracking tarmac, deep craters, loose kerb stones, and paving slabs that are a trip hazard.

And guess what? This whole area is covered by just one CCTV camera.

Meanwhile, the main High Street and Princesshay areas seem to get all the funding, all the maintenance, and all the attention.

Why is Fore Street; a street full of hardworking independents, treated like a second-class part of the city?

Fore Street deserves better. Exeter deserves better.

It’s time to stop ignoring the real issues on our doorstep.

Our water bills have gone up by almost 50% whilst the CEO of SouthWest Water got a 58% pay increase bringing her total salary to £860,000. Why the pay increase when SW Water has systematically failed to manage the sewage systems in the Southwest making our coastlines often dangerous to swim in? Vote for change

The chief executive of the water group received a 58 per cent pay hike in the most recent financial year, according to a report - despite pollution incidents almost doubling

Can’t find a public toilet? In 2019 City Council shut over half of the 26 Public WCs due to ‘cost cutting’ while able to fund an expensive and superfluous 'green' leisure centre. In St David’s and Haven Banks area we only have one on the quay and even these do not have Mother + Baby facilities. Lack of public conveniences disproportionately affects elderly, disabled, and young families and discourages high street spending.

Doesn’t Exeter need a new road into Haven Banks via Marsh Barton? Alphington Road is already a nightmare traffic-wise… and the new housing development on Water Lane is going to make it even worse. Local residents are justifiably concerned about this; it is unclear if council leaders are taking this into consideration.

What is happening with the development of the Harlequin Centre? Original development plans included a stipulation of 20% affordable housing…but this appears to have been scrapped …. in spite of Exeter’s housing crisis.
