Callout to Budleigh Salterton earlier today . Concern for welfare of kayaker from a member of the public on the beach . Excellent view of the western end of the beach from our strategically placed Coastie Doug (Ex4)at Sandy Bay holiday park. The rest of team were positioned high up at steamer steps with good views east and west. Coastie Alan ( Ex12) and Coastie Dave (Ex9) on the beach to discuss with the first informant . Nil untoward found and so this was considered a false alarm with good intent . A lovely sunny Saturday was rounded off with an ice cream from our good friends at Budleigh unwrapped .

It was a pleasure to spend the afternoon with some lively and well behaved young people from St Peter’s School , lympstone . The children have been looking at UK emergency services and today was our turn . We started off with a water safety quiz and then we had a search exercise in full kit . The children all had a go at throwing rescue lines ( as did their teachers !) the children had a chance to examine all our kit. Our search was successful and the children strapped our casualty in to the stretcher and carried him off the beach .

As we returned to station the team were deployed to straight point to meet a young chap who found himself cut off on the rocks by the incoming tide . He was safely brought ashore by our colleagues inshore lifeboat RNLI Exmouth, safety advice from us and a wee bit of a telling off from mum !

A long day but it was great to be out in the great British countryside with our friends and colleagues from Beer Coastguard Rescue Team and HM Coastguard - South Devon & SE Cornwall - Area 10 management team for a days revalidation and upskilling in cliff rescue. Whilst thankfully we are not called to this scenario too often it’s a vital skill that both teams need to have . Revalidation and upskilling was completed to a satisfactory standard with everyone who needed to be signed off.

Duration ; 0900-1530
Location; Hooken Cliffs( just to the west of Beer )
Weather ; bright and sunny, easterly breeze.
