Those of you in the northeast of England that are keen to see the full-length Meet The Buchanans movie might be interested in this one! The film is being screened this Sunday in Newcastle as part of the North East International Film Festival.

The screening will take place at 4pm on Sunday 24 November in the Culture Lab.

It would be awesome to see some Watsons there supporting the screening - send us your pictures if you can make it!

We were lucky enough to have a private tour of the Cammo estate with Ann Kerrigan and Norma Johnstone of the Edinburgh Archaeological Field Society today. They were kind enough to spend a couple of hours walking us round the estate, talking us through the archaeology that has already been done and what it tells us about the history of the estate. The Watsons of Saughton, who owned the estate during the 18th and 19th centuries, made a huge impact on the place, and to this day there are plenty of clues as to their presence!

Took a break from Watson-related sites today to pay a visit to Edinburgh Castle, followed by a whisky tour and tasting at the Leith Distillery. A great day, slightly ruined at the end by the one-hour walk back to the hotel due to the City of Edinburgh shutting down all the buses due to the rugby with absolutely zero warning 😡

Paid another visit to Corstorphine Old Parish Church, burial place of several generations of the Watsons of Saughton. It’s easy to make out where the Watsons’ private entrance doorway was until it was bricked up in 1905. One of the ring stones that covered their burial place now covers the inside of the doorway.

A lovely day today - met up with some of our American members for a visit to Greyfriars Kirkyard and to see the Watson mazer in the National Museum of Scotland, and then met some of our more local members at the UK premiere of the Meet the Buchanans movie. Lovely to meet everyone!

Drove out to Dalmahoy this morning to see St Mary’s Episcopal Church, built by Helen Watson and her husband, Lord Aberdour and consecrated in 1850. Unfortunately, Helen’s tomb is the only one on which you can’t read the inscription. A lovely, peaceful spot, and well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Visited Old Pentland Cemetery this morning, resting place of Henrietta Gibsone, elder sister of Charles Watson, 9th of Saughton. Henrietta married Sir John Gibsone of Pentland and is buried in the Gibsone family mausoleum - which is a lot bigger than it looks in the pictures! Also of note is the 18th-century watch house that was built by families of those interred here so that they could guard against graverobbers digging up the recently deceased and selling their bodies for medical research!
