West Street Play Park Update 🛝

I know there have been a few concerns about the sudden closure of the play park in West Street, so I wanted to explain what’s happened.

The park was already due to close from 24 August as part of the Town Centre Regeneration Programme, when the existing equipment will be removed and replaced with a brand-new play area.

Unfortunately, during a routine inspection earlier this month, the main play structure was found to have severely deteriorated timber and failing components, meaning it was no longer considered safe to use. The Council therefore had no choice but to close it immediately.

Sadly, locks, chains and closure signs have repeatedly been removed and people have continued to access the park, including climbing over the railings. Please don’t do this. The park is closed because the equipment has been assessed as unsafe.

The good news is that rather than leaving it closed throughout the remainder of the summer, the programme has been brought forward, with work on the new play area now due to start this Friday. 🎉

Subject to the final inspections on 14 September, we’re hoping the brand-new park will be open and ready to enjoy around the middle of September.

We know the timing during the school holidays isn’t ideal, but safety has to come first. Hopefully once work starts this week, everyone will be able to see that this isn’t simply a park being closed, it’s an old one making way for something much better! 💛

🌿 A little bit of teamwork goes a long way!

Residents on Western Road contacted me about the verge, which had become very overgrown and was proving tricky to tackle because of the steep bank and the number of cars usually parked alongside it.

After a bit of organising with residents to get the parking spaces cleared, the Council team were able to get in safely and give the whole verge a much-needed cut back. ✂️🌳

A big thank you to Mike and the team for getting the work done, and especially to the residents who helped coordinate things and made sure the area was clear for them.

Sometimes getting these things sorted just needs everyone working together. 💛

Before ➡️ After… quite a difference!

💛 A great afternoon over in Bedhampton!

Lovely to spend a few hours with our Lib Dem colleagues chatting to residents, dropping off surveys and, most importantly, hearing what people actually want and need from their local representatives.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, quite a few of the issues sounded very familiar to us in Fareham… and yes, potholes were right up there! 🕳️🚗

One conversation really stood out though. A carer answered the door while visiting a housebound resident and, while we were chatting, mentioned that she lives over in Cosham. She said the difference with roads and pavements there is incredible, with issues she’s reported being repaired the very same day.

It was really interesting to hear first-hand what a difference well-maintained roads and pavements can make, particularly from someone whose job takes her out and about in different areas every day.

Lots of useful conversations, plenty of feedback to take away and, as always, a reminder that many of the issues residents care about cross council and ward boundaries.

And we may also have had the youngest Lib Dem survey deliverer in history helping us today… 👶💛🔶

Never too young for a clipboard! 😂
