In 1989, Nintendo launched the Game Boy, The Simpsons premiered, and global superstar Taylor Swift was born.

More importantly, there was a change that shook the UK Health and Safety sphere…

The Electricity at Work Regulations (EAWR) 1989 came into effect.

This required Duty Holders to maintain electrical systems to prevent danger. Although it wasn’t mandatory, PAT testing was suggested as a means to carry out regular safety checks.

What has been achieved in the last 36 years?

✅Fires in non-domestic buildings caused by faulty appliances dropped from 6,800 incidents in 1989 to 4,000 incidents in 2011/12.

✅PAT testing is now key in identifying counterfeit electrical goods, such as illegal or unsafe products. Reports indicate £30 million of counterfeit electrical products entered the UK in 2010, and 15 million were seized between 2001–2013.

A solid PAT Testing routine not only helps with monitoring equipment deterioration, but also, detects counterfeit and potentially dangerous products, keeping the potential risk of fire to a minimum.

Be aware. As of April 29th, BS 5839-1:2025 Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings. Code of practice for design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of systems in non-domestic premises will be published.
All fire alarm works should comply to this current version.
