Calling all Teens & Young Adults
Last weekend with the hotter weather 12 young people in the UK tragically lost their lives whilst swimming outdoors.
Now being really keen on wild swimming..
I know there is nothing more refreshing when you are boiling than stripping off and going for a swim.
But here’s the thing..
The outside temperature may be roasting but the water is still cold especially the lower level.
And going into the cold water at speed ( diving or jumping) causes Cold Water Shock.
The body’s reaction to cold water shock is involuntary meaning you have very little control over how your body reacts.
‘It will affect your ability to move and may seriously affect your breathing and cardiovascular system.
Blood vessels in your skin will close and output from your heart will rise causing your blood pressure to increase. This will put your heart under strain and could cause a heart attack.
The sudden cooling of the skin can also make you gasp involuntarily and increase your breathing rate which can cause you to panic, inhale water and potentially drown’*
Now we are not saying don’t go into the water because we know that there is so much fun to be had, but do it safely.
So here is how.
👇
👉Never, never, never 👈 jump or dive into cold water without acclimatising first and know the area you are jumping into.
☀️Have a look where you are planning on swimming. Does it look safe, is it a gentle slopping entry, can you get in & out easily and be careful of anything submerged which could cause a hazard.
☀️Walk in gradually and let your body get used to the temperature.
☀️Control your breathing so it is rhythmical and relaxed- this is a fundamental rule for all wild swimming.
☀️Swim with buddies but don’t put them at risk by not following the guidance
☀️Don’t stay in too long - hyperthermia is another risk
☀️Have something dry and warm to change into afterwards.
☀️ Know your swim ability and don’t go out of your depth
If you have done all that and you still find yourself in difficulty follow the Float to Live guidance.
👇
🐬Float on your back
🐬Tilt your head back - your ears will be in the water.
🐬 If in a river lead with your feet
🐬Don’t panic and focus on controlling your breathing
🐬Once your breathing is under control shout for help and if possible gently guide yourself to the bank
Enjoy the warmer weather and wild water responsibly..
