The Light Dragoons

The Light Dragoons The Light Dragoons - England's Northern Cavalry As a result, a Light Dragoon soldier has to be a master of many roles.

Wherever the Army is deployed, in war and peace, the Light Cavalry soldier is at the front, preparing the way for the rest of the force. These can include scouting for information about the enemy, engaging enemy targets or guiding fast jets.

Battle PT is designed to develop the physical robustness, teamwork and aggression required on operations.

Through stretcher carries, casualty extraction drills and close combat training, soldiers are pushed under fatigue to reflect the demands of the battlefield and the realities of operating with heavy equipment over difficult terrain.

Fitness in the Light Dragoons is not just about endurance. It is about remaining effective under pressure, carrying essential equipment across difficult ground, and continuing to fight as a team when pushed beyond your limit.

Into the ring. Into the fight. Find your limit. Go beyond it.

Under the lights, there’s nowhere to hide. Just you, your opponent, and the will to win. It takes guts to step through the ropes, and even more to stay there when it starts to hurt.

That fighting spirit is what defines us. The same grit, discipline and controlled aggression shown in the ring is what we carry into operations. Staying composed under pressure, trusting your training, and pushing on when it matters most.

This was an excellent night of boxing and a clear demonstration of fighting spirit across the regiment.

An outstanding evening like this wouldn’t be possible without our sponsors. Thank you to and their ambassador for getting behind the event, along with Genesis and .military for their continued support.

A special mention to former European super middleweight champion for attending as our VIP guest.

A big thank you to for capturing the night and the moments that made it.

It takes courage to step up. It takes more to keep going.

🔥 Ready to fight in any environment.

The Light Dragoons have been conducting mounted ranges across multiple countries, terrains and weather conditions, ensuring crews remain lethal and effective wherever they operate.

Firing the GPMG, HMG and GMG weapon systems, soldiers continue to develop their marksmanship while refining the skills and drills needed to fight from their vehicles. The training also strengthens crew cohesion, building the teamwork and trust required to operate as effective mounted crews.

From sun to snow and desert to darkness, the Regiment continues to train to stay ready for anything.

We were honoured to host rugby league legend Adrian Morley at the Light Dragoons Crew Commanders’ Dinner Night. A Hall of Famer, former NRL and Super League Grand Final winner, and one of the most capped British internationals of the modern era, Adrian brought with him the experience of competing and leading at the very highest level of professional sport.

Now serving as Player Ambassador and Wellbeing Manager for , he continues to invest in people long after his playing career, championing resilience, accountability and personal development.

Speaking to Qualified Crew Commanders through to the Commanding Officer, Adrian drew clear parallels between elite rugby league and leadership within the Army. Standards are non-negotiable, trust is earned daily, and pressure reveals character. Above all, he emphasised that his most powerful form of leadership was leading by example, setting the tone through actions rather than words.

Our first Crew Commanders’ Dinner in some time brought together leaders at every level, reinforcing the bonds between those preparing to take the next step and those already carrying the responsibility.

In both elite sport and the Regiment, leadership is not declared, it is demonstrated.

The Light Dragoons: 28 January

Thirty years ago today, we remember Trooper John Robert Kelly, Trooper Andrew Ovington, and Lieutenant Richard Wyndham Madden of The Light Dragoons, who were killed while serving on operations in Tito Devár, Bosnia, on 28 January 1996.

With the Regiment spread across multiple locations on exercise, in camp, and deployed overseas. The Light Dragoons have paused today, wherever they are, to remember three of our own who gave their lives in service to their Regiment and their country.

Their sacrifice is woven into the history and identity of The Light Dragoons and will never be forgotten.
As the Dragoons of today, we carry their legacy forward through our professionalism, our camaraderie, and our commitment to one another.

We will remember them.

Live Fire Tactical Training | Kenya 🇰🇪

One fire team. One action. No margin.

Dismounted reconnaissance demands a high level of skill and discipline. Operating forward in small teams is not routine soldiering. It requires judgement, restraint, and the ability to act decisively under pressure. There is no mass, no redundancy, and little margin for error.

Small teams offer discretion and freedom of manoeuvre, but they operate with limited support and reduced combat power. If contact is made, survival depends on control, teamwork, and the ability to break contact quickly and deliberately.

Break contact drills are therefore trained relentlessly. One element fixes, the other moves. Fire is controlled. Movement is purposeful. Distance is created until separation is achieved and the team escapes the fight.

This is not about drills for their own sake. These actions are trained under live fire because they matter. The difference between doing them well and doing them poorly can be the difference between life and death.

This is Recce soldiering.
This is why we train it for real.
