THE GATESHEAD HIGH FELL BY ELECTION
Statement by the Leader of the Council, Nick Allan
I would like to pass on my heartfelt congratulations to Lindsay Atkinson, who becomes our latest Reform councillor and who now represents the High Fell Ward alongside councillors Arthur Boylin and Sid Laws. We all look forward to working with Lindsay for the benefit of High Fell and the Borough of Gateshead.
We also ought to relay our repsect and commiserations to Labour candidate Kathryn Walker who last won the ward with a majority of 1300 votes. We understand that Kathryn is a well-respected and popular resident. She was a worthy opponent.
The campaign was marred by some scandalous and outrageous claims and behaviour by The Labour Party, including distortions and untruths made by the Labour Election Agent. Reform Gateshead ARE funding the costs of the election campaign because we felt it fair to residents as it was one of our own councillors who resigned (for the most understandable of reasons). Let me be clear, we AREN’T paying any invoices. The £19,000 cost initially comes from the Electoral Services Budget. Rather, we are COMPENSATING the council for the cost by one of our Cabinet Members forgoing their Special Responsibility Allowance (also £19,000). In this way, the council and residents of Gateshead will be no worse off.
Using the guise of a very restricted and questionable enquiry to our Monitoring Officer, Labour used the response to call us LIARS. They steadfastly refused to tell the full truth and they actively tried to mislead voters. This matter is now the subject of an official complaint to the council and, ultimately, the Electoral Commission.
And yet, despite this behaviour, the name calling, the use of tropes to describe us as fascists and racists and hiding behind the façade of a former councillor, they STILL failed to win!
Labour may take some comfort from the small majority but they ought to reflect that, despite a turnout of only 21%, they STILL managed to lose another 18% of their vote compared to that which they received in May – only 2 months ago! Compared to the previous election, they have lost 63% of their vote. WHY? – because they have nothing to offer than a truly awful record in running the council, have no policies and can resort only to attacking personalities. The result last night reflects on their record, their attitude and, more importantly, their future which looks increasing dismal.
Our profound thanks to the voters of High Fell who turned out to support us once again!
NICK ALLAN
Leader of Gateshead Council.
