This week Amanda is in the library chair reading "This Book Made Me Think of You" by Libby Page, a "locally grown author" who attended Gillingham School. Tilly has lost her husband to cancer but before he dies he arranges a gift of a book per month for a year arranged through the local bookshop. The books encourages Tilly to try new experiences and travel to places rather than feeling completely lost and swallowed up in her grief. It's definitely a feel good book and it flies the flag for visiting and buying from your local bookshop. Amanda loved the book recommendations from the fictional bookshop and has even ordered some of the books! She would love to be part of the community that the bookshop created but thinking about it the staff at Gillingham Library are privileged to already belong to one here.

Our National Year of Reading theme for May is Read, Feel, Explore. At Gillingham Library we want to highlight the extraordinary life of Helen Keller, an advocate for blind and deafblind people.
Despite being blind and deaf from early childhood, Keller learned to communicate, read, write, and speak. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Radcliffe College in 1904, becoming the first deafblind person to achieve a university degree. This was a landmark moment that challenged widespread assumptions about what blind people could accomplish. Keller's education, particularly her partnership with teacher Anne Sullivan, demonstrated effective teaching methods for blind and deafblind learners. Her success helped promote access to formal education, literacy, and higher education for blind people.

Thanks to all who came to our Half term craft this week on our National Year of Reading theme of Read, Feel, Explore!
We started with a guessing game of what is in the bag using only touch and hearing (answers included scrunched up paper, jelly babies and a wooden egg), and investigated giant print and Braille books.
The children then made some fantastic sensory boards and created some beautiful marbled paper with shaving foam and food colouring!

Amanda also went to the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry to see the play adaptation of the book "Poor" by Katriona O' Sullivan. The memoir charts the life of Katriona whose childhood deals with poverty, addiction and homelessness. However, there is a message for all as she battles to end this cycle of poverty and in particular the addiction. She eventually turns her life around, when she learns of a university access programme at Trinity College Dublin. This leads to a 1st Class Honours degree, a Masters and a PhD. Katriona now writes and lectures to inspire others. The play was a truly moving experience with a standing ovation for the author and actors with most of the audience in tears.

Amanda enjoyed her visit to Coventry Central Library and was intrigued to see the different services that were offered including a Sensory lending library, quiet spaces and paying local council bills. Also it was wonderful to see on a Friday afternoon the buzz of school students revising for their GCSEs, which was made possible with so many tables and desks everywhere.

Amanda had a weekend of nostalgia on a trip to Coventry visiting the University of Warwick where she was a student many years ago. There were massive changes and a wealth of new buildings but the library still looked the same. Unfortunately, she was unable to enter the building as you needed a security pass but she was sure there were students in there busily revising for the summer exams.
