REFORM UK WEST SURREY STATEMENT
Labour's decision to halt and review Local Government Reorganisation across much of England exposes exactly what Reform UK has been warning about all along.
While councils across the country are now seeing these plans paused, challenged or reconsidered, Surrey has already been forced through a costly and controversial reorganisation. Residents here were told Labour's plans were robust, legally sound and essential. Now the Government is reviewing the very process it imposed on Surrey.
The question is simple: if these concerns justify a review elsewhere, why was Surrey denied one?
Surrey has been Labour's guinea pig.
Labour pushed ahead despite growing opposition and has even ignored its own stated preference for authorities serving populations of no more than 500,000 residents when it came to Surrey. One rule for everyone else, another for Surrey.
But Labour is not alone. Surrey Conservatives at County Hall shamefully waved these plans through with little meaningful challenge. Rather than standing up for Surrey residents, they backed Labour's reorganisation and failed to hold the Government to account.
The people of Surrey deserve better than a stitch-up between Labour ministers and a Conservative administration more concerned with protecting itself than defending local democracy.
Reform UK West Surrey is also clear that local taxpayers must not be left paying for the mistakes of the past. We are calling on the Government to write off the transfer of legacy debt from borough and district councils into any new unitary authorities. Residents should not be saddled with decades of financial mismanagement through higher council taxes, service cuts or increased borrowing.
If Labour wants Local Government Reorganisation, then Labour should take responsibility for the consequences.
Surrey residents should not be left carrying the debt, the risk and the bill for a policy that is now unravelling under national scrutiny.
