Hanging Baskets on the Thames Bridge
Goring-on-Thames Parish Council commissioned a structural survey of all our lampposts in the village in January 2025 due to concerns raised by Goring in Bloom as to structural integrity. Once a safety concern is raised, we as a council must act accordingly, and make sure public safety comes first. Furthermore until we are sure of the structural integrity our insurance will not cover any potential claims related to that.

Although we own the lampposts on the bridge the bridge structure is owned & managed by OCC. OCC have justifiably shown concern over the weight and possible wind shear force of 2 baskets per column attached to the bridge and have so far been unable to give us the required assurance, especially as they did not have enough information on the bridge structure to which the lamp posts are mounted. Without a full survey identifying the above factors OCC are currently only allowing to placing of pendants or flags etc under 2 kgs per column after seeking OCC permission first.

We are in consultation with OCC who have been very helpful in identifying issues for a specialist survey to address. We will let the village know when we have made any progress.

Fortunately the village still has the benefit of the same number of our beautiful Hanging Baskets which now adorn additional areas in the village from May.

Once we know the option for the necessary bridge survey, availability & cost to the village, it can be to full council for discussion. Please follow us on www.gorishparishcouncil.gov.uk and sign up for email notifications on the home page

Goring on Thames Parish Council are in the very early stages of investigating the possibilities of building a pumptrack in the village. We are looking to partner with the cycling design charity Oxtrails https://www.oxtrails.org.uk/ to see if this project is feasible. This charity focuses on active community engagement and getting young people involved in the design process. We are looking at a number of sites and no decisions have been made. We are in the process of formulating initial ideas. When we have these ideas, we will share with the community for discussion and involvement. Please make any comments to the Deputy Clerk - email at [email protected]
