A COLLECTIVE VOICE FOR GOSPORT - SMALL BOAT MOTION

Since the cancellation of the Extraordinary Council Meeting that was called by reform and due to take place on 22 September, we have not stood still.

We have continued to take action, ask questions and seek answers from the Home Office about the use of Gosport sites and the wider implications for our community.

Despite repeated attempts to engage with the Home Secretary, we have still not received the level of response and engagement that Gosport deserves.

But the lack of response cannot mean a lack of action.

We have been clear about why Gosport is not a suitable site and the need for the Government to properly assess the operational, logistical, environmental and community implications of any proposed use of sites here.

We have also been equally clear about what we do not support.

We do not support disorder, criminal damage, intimidation or inflammatory language.

And we want to put on record our thanks and support for our emergency services and the RNLI.

But action is needed.

Gosport needs a strong, collective and pragmatic voice. That means working together, putting politics aside where we can, and making clear and evidence-based requests of Government.

We have therefore worked on a Full Council Motion with the main opposition which reflects this approach. It sets out the concerns of Gosport, the action we believe is needed, the importance of proper communication and the support we want to give to our emergency services.

The motion has been published and we hope that all councillors will approach the debate constructively and sensibly next week.

This is not about political point-scoring.
It is about Gosport speaking with a clear, united and pragmatic voice and demanding action and answers from Government.

We may not agree on everything, but on an issue that is having such a significant impact on our community, I believe we should be able to work together in the interests of Gosport.

Gosport deserves to be heard.

DISGRACEFUL.

The Home Office’s silence is deafening.

When asked why Gosport was chosen on this occasion, their response was that they “do not comment on operational processes.”

That simply isn’t good enough.

Gosport residents deserve to know why our town was selected, who made the decision and what safeguards are in place to prevent it happening again.

We have repeatedly asked the Government for answers. We should not have to keep asking.

I have now written to the Government twice once before the events of 22 September and again afterwards making our position absolutely clear.

I am completely bemused and frankly flabbergasted that we appear to be having to make the same point again.

Gosport is not a suitable first-choice location for the disembarkation or processing of irregular small-boat arrivals.

We have raised our concerns clearly. We have asked for answers. We have asked for proper communication with our community.

Yet once again, here we are!

This is not about creating unnecessary alarm. It is about the very real uncertainty caused when residents see emergency preparations and blue lights appearing in their community.

We aware of reports of a migrant boat crossing from Normandy towards the south coast of the UK.

Gosport Borough Council and Caroline Dinenage MP have contacted the Home Office to request an urgent update. At present, there is nothing to suggest that the boat will be landing in Gosport.

Understandably, local police will be making preparations should that situation change.

Gosport Borough Council Leader Cllr Zoe Huggins BEM is working closely with Caroline and Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones for Mayor on this issue, and we will update residents as soon as we know more.

🚌 Making bus travel safer and more reliable in Gosport

Gosport Conservatives are pleased to see real progress on bus travel and passenger safety across Gosport, delivered by Hampshire County Council's Conservative administration working with partners.

✅ 18 new bus shelters have now been installed along the Eclipse busway on Henry Cort Way, with new real-time information screens following.

🚧 Fencing repairs have been completed along the worst-condition sections of Henry Cort Way.

👮 Travel Safe Officers are now patrolling Gosport buses and the busway, providing a visible and reassuring presence for passengers and working to discourage anti-social behaviour. Four officers are already in post, with recruitment continuing for the remaining positions.

💡 All 45 streetlights along the busway corridor are now operating throughout the night, removing the previous midnight to 5am switch-off.

📹 Coming soon: new CCTV cameras are being installed, with around 16 new lighting columns being provided along Henry Cort Way to support the CCTV system. Further cameras are also planned at Mumby Road/South Street and Stoke Road.

🌳 Coming soon: vegetation and overgrown trees along the busway will be cut back to improve visibility, lighting and CCTV coverage.

💷 There is also support for passengers facing cost-of-living pressures, including a £1 capped evening fare on First Solent services from 23 October to 17 December, followed by the Government-funded reduction of the £3 bus fare cap to £2 from January 2027.

These improvements are about making public transport safer, more accessible and more reassuring for residents who rely on buses every day.
