One of the joys of shopping directly from our local farm shop is that you never quite know what the week’s harvest will bring.

There are gluts and gaps. Some crops thrive while others struggle. And after one of the driest summers we’ve experienced, that feels particularly visible this year.

Our Farm Shop reflects what is actually growing here, right now — harvested from our market garden, often just hours before it reaches the stall. No air miles, no forcing the plants with artificial inputs, and very little time between picking and the produce reaching your shopping bag.

And despite the challenging conditions this summer, there’s plenty to harvest! This week we will have:

🥔 Freshly dug main-crop potatoes
🫘 Beans
🍆 Aubergines
🍅 Tomatoes
🫜 Beetroot
🌱 Patty pan squash
🥬 Spinach, kale & chard
🫑 Peppers & chillies
🥒 Courgettes & cucumbers
🌿 Fresh basil
🌻 Plus beautiful Horsenden-grown flowers

It might not look exactly the same from one Saturday to the next — but that’s the point!

Shopping seasonally means making the most of what’s abundant, discovering something different and reconnecting with where our food comes from. And every purchase helps us continue growing food and flowers right here at Horsenden. 💚

Come and see what this week’s harvest has given us!

Supporting Local Food Matters More Than Ever! 🌱

This has been one of the hardest growing summers we’ve ever experienced at Horsenden. Across the country, growers and farmers have been battling prolonged drought, extreme heat and increasingly unpredictable conditions, and we’ve felt those challenges here too.

It’s also a powerful reminder of why local food production matters.

At a time when climate change is putting increasing pressure on the way our food is grown and supplied, building strong, diverse local food systems is an important part of making our communities more resilient.

Growing food locally means developing the skills, knowledge, growing spaces and networks we need to feed our communities. And if we want local farms and growers to be here in the future, we need to support them now.

Despite an incredibly difficult summer, Horsenden is still producing an amazing harvest of fresh, seasonal vegetables and flowers. Every purchase from the Farm Shop directly supports our growing work and helps us continue producing food right here in our community. 🌱🥒🍅🌻

So come and support your local farm this Saturday, take home some fantastic produce, and be part of building a stronger, more resilient local food system.

We need local food production now more than ever. 💚

🌱To our Saturday morning regulars — thank you! 🌱

Every Saturday, without fail, we see familiar faces arriving bright and early at the Horsenden Farm Shop, bags and baskets at the ready, eager to see what’s been harvested from the farm that week.

Some of you even arrive before we’ve quite finished setting up! 😅 And we absolutely love it.

It’s going to be another hot one this Saturday, but our volunteers will be out early harvesting to ensure that the produce is as fresh as it can be, picked just hours before we open.

Your support genuinely means the world to us. Every potato, courgette, tomato, cucumber, bundle of greens or bunch of flowers you buy helps us continue growing regenerative food here at Horsenden, maintain the farm and keep this special community project thriving.

So to everyone who gets up on a Saturday morning and chooses to buy their vegetables and flowers from a small community farm rather than the supermarket - thank you. We notice, and we appreciate every single one of you.

If you haven’t visited yet, come and see what the farm has produced this week!

🌾 Harvest Time at Horsenden 🌾
We’ve just reached Lammas (or Loaf Mass), the ancient festival traditionally observed at the beginning of August to celebrate the first grain harvest. It marks the turning of the year, a moment to pause, give thanks for the season’s abundance, and celebrate before autumn begins its slow approach.

This Saturday, you’ll find us in two places at once, celebrating the harvest in our own way.

🌱Horsenden Farm Shop (10.00am–12.30pm) will be brimming with freshly harvested organic produce, grown with care by our incredible volunteers. Expect potatoes, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, courgettes, green beans, basil, spinach, chard and whatever else the fields have generously provided this week. Much of it is harvested just hours before we open, making it about as fresh as food can be!

🌱 Boston Manor Farmers’ Market (9.30am–2.30pm) will feature Horsenden Farm Flowers, with a beautiful collection of everlasting dried flower bouquets and posies—perfect for the summer heatwave. We’ll also have a limited selection of freshly harvested farm vegetables, so you can pick up a taste of Horsenden while you’re there. We’ll be joined by our friends at Perivale Brewery and their fantastic locally brewed beers, making it a wonderful opportunity to support local growers and producers all in one place.

Every bunch of flowers, every bag of vegetables and every jar of jam you purchase helps support our local, sustainable food production and the Friends of Horsenden charity’s work to care for this remarkable place.

We’d love you to come and celebrate the harvest with us—whether at the farm or at Boston Manor. 💚

Behind our Farm Shop is a team of incredibly dedicated volunteers. Every Monday, they come together to sow, w**d, water, mulch, harvest and care for our market garden. Then, on Saturday mornings, while many people are still enjoying a lie-in, they are here from 8am picking produce.

We believe that everyone should have access to fresh, organic, locally grown, nutritious food. The shop is open every Saturday from 10am to 12.30pm. Every purchase you make helps make that possible. The money we raise supports the work of the Friends of Horsenden charity, helping us care for this special place, grow more food, support volunteers, run community projects and keep Horsenden the magical place that it is.

This week’s harvest includes:
• Potatoes
• Onions
• Tomatoes
• Cucumbers
• Peppers
• Padrón peppers
• Patty pan squash
• Courgettes
• Green beans
• Basil
• Chard
• Spinach

And beautiful seasonal bunches and posies from Horsenden Farm Flowers .

If you’ve been meaning to visit, this is your invitation! Come and stock up on beautiful seasonal produce, meet the team, and support a truly local, community-led farm 💚

🥒Curcubits are the flavour of the week at the Horsenden Farm Shop! 🥒 #

The recent sunshine has our squash patch in full production, and we’re harvesting plenty of patty pan squash, courgettes and delicious crisp cucumbers.

If you’ve never cooked with patty pan squash before, now’s the perfect time to give it a try. This week our wonderful Wednesday volunteers enjoyed a delicious lunch of pasta with roasted patty pan squash, courgettes, fresh tomatoes and basil – a simple seasonal recipe that was a big hit!

Alongside our cucurbits, this week’s harvest also includes new potatoes, onions, tomatoes, basil, kale, spinach, chard, sweet peppers and padrón peppers. You’ll also find delicious farm-made apricot jam, chutney and local honey – perfect for stocking your pantry.

💐 Horsenden Farm Flowers has created beautiful jam jar posies and seasonal bunches, filled with long-lasting summer favourites including statice, strawflowers and Achillea. These heat-loving blooms will brighten your home for weeks, and once they’re finished you can simply dry them to enjoy for months – even years – to come.
