ROSS TIGER

ROSS TIGER Official page of the 1957 Great Grimsby trawler, ROSS TIGER! Preserved by N. E. Lincs Council as a tribute to the trawlermen of the town.

This is the official page for Great Grimsby's historic side trawler, ROSS TIGER! The page is updated by members of staff at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre. This ship allows you to see the kind of ships that men from the 'world's premier fishing port' called home whilst working in a job described as the most dangerous in the UK. Believed to be the earliest surviving diesel middle/deep-water si

de-trawler in the country, the ship is a very important and fascinating survivor that provides evidence of the great technological advances in the British fishing industry that were pioneered at Great Grimsby. Some final tidying and polishing ready for the and reflecting on a wonderful FULL week of school visits aboard in our first week open again to visitors since last year! Doesn't she look smart?

The front of the wheelhouse is almost completed and the scaffolding will soon be down, following the repainting work. The Ross Tiger was in fact launched in 1956, 70 years ago this year and was completed and in service early in 1957. A special time for the ship...

The family of former Skipper Jeff Colbert have asked us to share the news that Jeff sadly passed away yesterday, Friday 5th September. Jeff, seen here in his younger days in the dark hat on deck, would later become a well known skipper in Grimsby and for a time was also skipper of ROSS TIGER. Later today, former 3rd Hand of Ross Tiger, Ron Telford, will lower the ensign of the ship to half mast to remember Jeff. All at the museum, including our colleagues and former skippers Dennis Avery and Bob Formby (friends and former colleagues of Jeff), pass on their sincere condolences. Sail peacefully, Skipper.
