This we are talking to smokers about their experiences and their motivations and barriers to stopping smoking. We are also providing information to those who are interested about the free OneYou support available in Surrey.

Our current project focusses on manual workers - a group known to have a higher proportion of smokers but less likely to engage with services that would support them to quit. So far we have spoken to over 70 people and provided information to 55 of those.

Going to where people are and where they feel comfortable is an important element of our work - so far this has included builders merchants, food banks, urgent treatment centres, trade cafés and being out and about on high streets.

We are as always really grateful to those who give us a few minutes of their time for these conversations.

Are you an unpaid carer or young carer in Surrey supporting someone with breast cancer - or have you done so in the past?

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we want to hear about your experience. You may be an adult carer, a young adult carer, or under 18 and helping a parent, sibling or another family member. Your evidence can help show what carers of all ages need before diagnosis, during treatment and beyond—and what should change across health, care, education and community services in Surrey.
Please tell us:
- What support helped you?
- What was difficult to access or missing?
- Were you recognised, listened to and given information you could understand?
- If you are a young carer, how has caring affected school or college, friendships, free time or your wellbeing?
- What would have made the biggest difference to you and your family?

Share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. You can respond anonymously, and please do not include names or details that could identify someone else. If you are under 18, you may wish to ask a trusted adult—such as a parent, teacher, youth worker or healthcare professional—to help you respond.

Support for carers and people affected by breast cancer
• Action for Carers Surrey and Surrey Young Carers: free information and support for carers of all ages. The Surrey Young Carers team supports children under 18 with tailored help, groups, activities, time out and opportunities to have their say. Young people aged 13 or over can register themselves; a family member or professional can also make a referral. Call 0303 040 1234, email [email protected] or visit Surrey Young Carers.
• Royal Surrey Cancer Centre: carer support includes Hospital Carer Support Advisers and the Fountain Centre. Visit Caring for someone with cancer.
• East Surrey Macmillan Cancer Support Centre, Redhill: a weekday drop-in service for patients, carers, family and friends. Call 01737 304176 or visit East Surrey Macmillan Cancer Support Centre.
• Breast Cancer Now: information and specialist support for anyone affected by breast cancer. Call 0808 800 6000 or visit Breast Cancer Now support services.
• Macmillan Cancer Support: practical, emotional and financial guidance. Call 0808 808 00 00.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and Blood Cancer Awareness Month. When a child or young person is diagnosed with cancer or a blood cancer, the impact is felt by the whole family. We want to hear from unpaid carers and families across Surrey.

Whether you are an adult unpaid carer supporting a child, partner, family member or friend, or a young carer supporting a brother, sister, parent or another family member, we want to know if you are aware of the help and support available to you.
- Do you know where to go for help and support?
- Do you know what support is available for unpaid adult carers?
- Do you know what support is available for brothers and sisters?
- What support has made a difference — and what is still missing?

Does your child help to care for, support or worry about their sibling with cancer? If so, they may be a young carer - a child or young person under 18 who provides practical or emotional support to someone in their family. This can include helping to care for a brother or sister with a serious illness, taking on extra responsibilities at home or providing emotional support.

“What motivated me to quit was the feeling of my lungs getting worse, I wanted them to feel normal again, now they are on the way to it.”

This is just one of the experiences we have heard from people about their thoughts on stopping smoking.

Did you know that after just 3 days of being smoke free, many people have more energy and breathing feels easier?

We know that one of the key reasons people want to stop smoking is considering others, for example wanting to be smoke free around children, wanting to set an example or having pressure from family to stop.
