Exciting things in Cornish waters! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

With the recent run of sunny weather, beachgoers haven't been the only ones enjoying Cornish waters. Recent sightings include impressive amounts of barrel jellyfish, Risso's dolphins, early mauve stingers, huge numbers of octopus and, this week, a leatherback turtle.

These species, while not unheard of here, remain rare and an indicator of changing waters. And with changing wildlife behaviour it's important that we adapt.

If you're heading out on the water this half term, please stay vigilant and keep your distance, at least 100m, especially from leatherbacks, which rest at the surface and are vulnerable to boat strikes due to poor hearing and low visibility. If you are lucky enough to spot one, do let us know.

Exciting jellyfish alert - a rare sighting of a mauve stinger jellyfish with its prey, a tiny mullet fish still inside it, was recently spotted washed up on a beach on the Isles of Scilly ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

Found in warmer waters worldwide, these jellyfish are particularly common in the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and around the equator. Due to rising sea temperatures, mauve stinger sightings are becoming more frequent in areas like the UK and Ireland

The dazzling mauve stinger jellyfish lives up to its name with a vibrant bell that can range from mauve and purple to pink, brown, and even yellow. They are bioluminescent, meaning they can create their own light. At night, they put on a dazzling display, emitting a soft, bioluminescent glow. While the mauve stinger rarely exceeds 12 cm (4.7 inches) in diameter, it packs a powerful punch. Its tentacles are lined with stinging cells called nematocysts, which deliver a painful sting

We've received an increasing number of reports of these jellyfish visiting our coastline this year. Remember, if you spot one, or any species of jellyfish, please let us know: mcsuk.org/sightings
