Today is my last day as councillor for Hadleigh!

I’ve handed back my IT, phone, and ID pass for Endeavour House, and said my final farewells to the staff.

I’m sure there will be many aspects of the position that I’ll miss over the next few weeks and some that I won’t. I’ve worked with some wonderful people who put the interests of the town before their own and many who have been fantastic support when times were challenging.

Thank you to everyone who have sent me such heartwarming messages of gratitude for my efforts these past 9-years - I really appreciated them.

My very best wishes for the future

Mick

Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) - Improved Services for Hadleigh

The DfT has allocated approximately £8M in funding to improve bus services and bus related infrastructure across the county. SCC will be allocating £500k of this funding through their 'Scheme on a page' system, where local groups and stakeholders (such as councillors, parishes, transit riders' groups, etc) can put together proposals for funding - whether it's for improving existing services with increased frequency or later running times, or improving the condition of your bus stops and shelters, in partnership with operators like ourselves.

The council would be keen to work with us to improve the services that they provide within Hadleigh. If you have any ideas that you would like to put forward to Suffolk's transport team, then please let them know at: [email protected]

In the previous round of BSIP funding our operators were able to introduce new services, enhance existing ones, and make tweaks to our routes to better serve where communities saw a need for service. These enhancements have all been a great success, so they are keen to work with us to see even more successes.

Suffolk County Council renews its pledge to the Armed Forces Covenant to support our serving and former personnel.

The council is a signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant, a formal pledge by the nation to ensure that members of the military community - those who serve or have served and their families, are treated fairly and with respect.

Launched in 2012, the original Covenant pledge focused on integration and shared armed forces community/civil society joint benefit projects. It also set out the conditions to deliver the covenant locally such as the creation of an Armed Forces Covenant Partnership Board and the appointment of a politically independent Armed Forces Commissioner for Suffolk.

The new Covenant better reflects the engagement, learning, legislation, and delivery that has taken place since the original pledge signed by most local authorities, including Suffolk, since 2012.

It was signed Councillor Matthew Hicks, the leader of Suffolk County Council, supported by council chairman Councillor Jessica Fleming and Suffolk Armed Forces Commissioner Andrew Smith.

It is important that we honour our Armed Forces community not only in words but through meaningful action. The Covenant helps ensure they feel valued, supported, and fully included in the life of the county.

Andrew Smith, a Royal Air Force veteran who is currently Colonel Cadets for East Anglia and the chairman of the Suffolk branch of the armed forces charity SSAFA, said:

“In recent years operations like Iraq and Afghanistan have highlighted issues like poor housing, mental health care, and medical support for veterans.

“The Covenant is a way to help address these concerns and I am delighted that Suffolk Council County Council continues to pledge its support.”

Today I took part in and voted in support to approve an historic devolution deal, paving the way for major investment for Suffolk. There was near unanimous support from councillors of all parties at the meeting of the Full Council.

Afterwards, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet has voted in favour of creating a new mayoral authority for Norfolk and Suffolk - which will bring £1 billion to the counties in the next 30 years.

The new mayoral combined county authority (MCCA) would have access to a starting annual investment fund of £37.4 million - funded by the government. This is in addition to devolved funding from Whitehall to deliver public services.

Suffolk County Council’s cabinet has voted in favour of creating a new mayoral authority for Norfolk and Suffolk - which will bring £1 billion to the counties in the next 30 years - following overwhelming support from councillors earlier today (Thursday 2 October).

Taylor Road has probably the worst surface damage of Hadleigh roads currently. After pressing Suffolk Highways on this issue for quite some time, I am glad to report that repairs should be carried out within the next 8-weeks.

I want to hear what you think about Local Government Reorganisation. The Labour Government in Westminster have chosen to reorganise local government in Suffolk. There are two proposals for our area – One Suffolk or multiple unitary authorities.
