Incidents and activity - week ending 16th November

The week from 09th - 16th saw Stornoway Coastguard Rescue Team involved in a number of Helicopter landing sites in support of Scottish Ambulance Service as well as two major deployments - the missing person on Thursday 13th (previously covered in separate Facebook post) and support to Police Scotland Highland & Islands with road closures following an accident in Harris over the weekend. This latter incident involved all our teams in Lewis assisting HM Coastguard - Isle of Harris Coastguard Rescue Team due to the duration of the support required.

Training continues across the area, picture supplied by Senior Ops Officer S18E (Colin Laing) showing HM Coastguard Kyle Of Lochalsh conducting joint casualty extraction exercise with Kyle Lifeboat RNLI.

AMBER WEATHER WARNING ⚠️
Friday 17:00 - Saturday 09:00 🕘

An amber wind warning has been issued across Western and Northern Scotland, including Inverness, Orkney, and the Western Isles, with strong, damaging winds of up to 95mph expected in the most exposed areas.

Cliffs are prone to crumble during strong winds and heavy rainfall so stay well back. One strong gust could push you over the edge.

If you are on the coast, stay safe by keeping away from the water. Large breaking waves can easily sweep you off your feet and carry you out to sea.

In a coastal emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Think before you leap. You don’t always know what you’re jumping into.
Tombstoning from piers, cliffs, rocks or other structures into the sea can be very dangerous.
The depth of the water can dramatically change with the tide, and what was a deep pool at lunchtime might be a shallow puddle by teatime.
You don’t know what hazards may be lurking under the surface until you are hurt or worse.
The shock of cold water may make it difficult to swim to safety and strong currents can
quickly sweep you away.
Remember to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard if you see anyone in difficult.

Two of our team headed up to Lewis on Sunday to be part of this exercise. It was a well constructed event aiding the guys with their personal development, boosting both skill set and confidence in leadership roles...... Plenty of water and factor 50 where definitely required 🌞😎
