Paiwand Paiwand is a refugee community organisation providing solidarity and support for the refugee, asylum seeking and migrant community in Northwest London

PAIWAND means unity, which is our principal aim as an Afghan Community Organisation – to unite our refugee community and improve the quality of our community’s life in its new homeland, here in the United Kingdom.

At Paiwand, our mission to support, guide, and uplift our community is a daily commitment. Every single day, our advocacy works tirelessly behind the scenes to connect individuals and families with the vital resources they need to thrive.
Recently, a pregnant mother reached out to us for help securing essential items for her upcoming arrival. Recognizing the urgency, the Paiwand advocacy team stepped in immediately to ensure she received the care and support she deserved. By referring her to the relevant authorities, we were able to help her secure £226.22 worth of essential items, including warm blankets, toys, fitted sheets, and more.
This is just one of the many cases we handle every week. From providing a helping hand in times of hardship to guiding individuals toward a brighter future, we are proud to stand with our community every step of the way.

One of our young residents has been busy tending to the garden, a small but meaningful taste of normal life after long and difficult journeys to safety.

While public debate often creates uncertainty for young asylum seekers, our commitment to supporting them never wavers.

I’ll never forget the day a man walked into our office with exhaustion written all over his face. He told us he hadn’t seen his children in years. Every phone call broke his heart. Despite having a solicitor, he had no valid documents — the legal support he received simply wasn’t enough because he couldn’t afford it.

Paiwand took on his case, and within weeks he received his status. The joy on his face was something none of us will ever forget.

When our immigration service reopened last January, we immediately began his family reunification application.
Today, we received the positive decisions for his family members.

This Eid will be a truly special one — not just for this family, but for all of us who share in their happiness.

On 18 March 2025, Afghan students, young people, and refugee‑rights activists — including members of Paiwand — gathered in Parliament Square to protest the UK’s decision to ban work visas for Afghans and suspend student visas.

The Home Office claims the restrictions are justified, but their own data tells a different story. Afghans make up less than 1% of all UK study visas, with only a few hundred Afghan students among the tens of thousands who come to the UK each year.

Using such small numbers to justify a blanket ban is misleading — and it closes one of the last safe and legal routes for Afghan youth seeking education and protection.

We are three people from India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Even though tensions often dominate relations between our home countries, here in the UK we stand together, supporting one another to make life easier and more pleasant in our new home.

Krishna and Arroj have done fantastic work for us, and I wish them every success in their journey beyond their time at Paiwand.
