A bonfire looks like a dream home to a hedgehog
🦔 🏡 Dry leaves. Warm gaps. A sheltered centre to burrow into, where predators won’t follow. Basically, Rightmove for hedgehogs. Until Bonfire Night arrives and sends their warm space up in smoke.

Before you light any bonfire, big or small, please check the pile thoroughly:
✔ Lift sections with a rake
✔ Look and listen for movement
✔ Shine a torch into gaps
✔ Rebuild the pile on the day of lighting, if possible.

A 2‑minute check can save a life. Let’s keep our hedgehogs safe this Bonfire Night. 💛🔥

🦔✨ Bonfire Night is nearly here!
Did you know bonfire piles look and feel like ideal hibernation spots? At this time of year, hedgehogs are actively seeking piles of leaves and branches large enough to deter predators from ferreting them out whilst asleep. That’s why local organisers check carefully before lighting, and we want to celebrate their actions, and ask anyone thinking of a bonfire to do the same.

Our friends at COPSE Community Orchard Project South East and the Countryside Regeneration Trust are hosting a brilliant Apple Juicing Day this half term, and it looks like such a lovely community event.

📅 Tuesday 27 October
⏰ 10am–3pm
📍 Grover’s Garden, Wood Road, Beacon Hill, Hindhead, GU26 6PR

Bring your own bottles and take home freshly pressed apple juice made from local orchards (including Green Farm). Kids can get hands‑on with the juicing kit, and there’s even a community pot if you’d like to add your own apples to the mix.

It’s relaxed, outdoors, seasonal, and a great way to support local growers and partners doing wonderful work for nature.

🦋 LAST CHANCE Wildlife Gardening Community Event, Tues 29 Sept

Tickets for our final Wildlife Gardening community event of the year are going fast, don't miss out!

Join us on Tuesday 29th September, 6.30–8.30pm at Museum for an evening dedicated to helping nature thrive in our gardens and green spaces.

🎤 Our headline speaker is Bill Downey of Butterfly Conservation, Surrey & SW London's Vice-Chair and county Transect Coordinator, who's spent years on the ground helping restore the rare Small Blue butterfly across the North Downs. If you want practical, expert advice on making your garden a haven for butterflies (and the rest of our wildlife), this is the talk to catch.

🦔🐦🌳 We'll also be sharing the latest updates on our Hedgehog, Swift, and Treescape projects — see how the community's work is making a real difference across Haslemere.

🌲 Why succession planning for local treescapes matters now.
Haslemere is one of the most wooded parishes in the UK, but our treescapes are under pressure. Climate stress, pests & invasive species, development, and decades of single‑age conifer planting without re-generation planning threaten the future of our woodlands.

Veteran and ancient trees are especially vulnerable, yet they’re also biodiversity powerhouses: home to bats, dormice, woodpeckers, fungi, beetles and countless other species.

By mapping and understanding these trees, we can help protect them, and strengthen the woodland network that supports so much local wildlife.

🌳 Veteran, Notable & Ancient Trees: Community Workshop 🌳
Our oldest trees are living landmarks: they hold history, support wildlife, and shape the character of our town. This autumn we’re launching a new community project to map, celebrate and protect them and we’d love residents from all walks of life to be part of it.

📅 Tues 29 Sept, 10–12pm
💚 All ideas welcome, but this is an action‑focused workshop for people keen to help take the project forward.

We’ll explore priorities, threats, and opportunities, then begin forming a community group to lead the work. If you care about trees, heritage or wildlife corridors, this is for you.

🌍💚 World Cleanup Day Haslemere style!
Join the big community clean‑up across Haslemere this Saturday, 19 September. Pick up a litter‑picker from Hasleway or The Town Hall between 10:00–13:00, head out with friends or family, and help make our town sparkle.

There are prizes for the most litter collected and the weirdest item found... every piece picked up makes a difference.

Let’s show what Haslemere can do when we come together. 💪♻️

Our volunteer community is growing fast and we’d love someone who enjoys connecting people to join us as Volunteer Coordinator. You’ll help new volunteers find their place, support their skills, and keep our projects running smoothly.
