Our own trustee Hana Gillani is running a radio show every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this Ramadan! Titled "Guldasta-e-Ramadan" (The bouquet of Ramadan"). 10-12, in Urdu, on 88FM. We're very proud!

Cruelty isn’t a solution - and it’s not a distraction we should fall for.

While the government pushes harsh asylum changes that create fear and instability, the real issues facing our communities remain untouched: fixing the NHS, building affordable housing, reducing staggering wealth inequality.

None of these problems are solved by making life harder for people seeking safety.

The proposed asylum changes swap protection for permanent insecurity, trapping people in a manufactured limbo that fuels fear, exploitation and destitution - and undermines the welcoming communities so many of us are working to build.

Politicians should focus on what the public actually cares about and and invest in policies which strengthens communities instead of dividing them: fair decisions, safe routes and the stability people need to rebuild their lives as our neighbours and colleagues.

We are deeply troubled by the government's proposed changes to the asylum system. We echo City of Sanctuary 's statement that cruelty is not a solution, and their call on the government to:
Maintain meaningful pathways to permanent protection for refugees
Ensure people seeking asylum have adequate support and the right to work
Make decisions fairly and promptly
Invest in integration, not deterrence
Listen to the communities who are building welcome, not those stoking division
