A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and heavy rain has been issued for Wednesday and Thursday (26 and 27 August) – along with a warning of possible flooding.
The risk of localised flooding is higher because of months of hot, dry weather which has left the ground extremely dry.
This week’s wet weather may lead to difficult driving conditions, disruption to power and other utilities, and a possible risk to life from fast-flowing flood water.
To help prepare for the risk of flooding:
• Know your flood risk and sign up for free flood alerts and warnings
• Pack a ‘grab bag’ of essential items, like medicines, bottled water and insurance documents, in case you need to stay put or leave your home in a hurry
• Check in on relatives and neighbours, particularly those who may find it harder to cope
• Check gutters, drains and downpipes, and clear leaves and debris
• Have an emergency plan and keep it handy – include things like emergency phone numbers
• Check out property flood resilience measures
• Find local flood resilience activities, such as your local flood warden scheme
• Never enter flood water, either on foot or in a vehicle. In an emergency, call 999

BIKER DOWN – FREE COURSES 🏍️
If you were first on the scene of a motorcycle collision, would you know what to do? The actions taken in the first few minutes following a collision could just possibly save a life. As motorcyclists often ride together, another biker may be the first person there to help.
Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service are running three FREE three-hour Biker Down courses on evenings in September and October.
Two are at Birstall Fire Station - the first of which is on Tuesday, 8 September and the second on 6 October - both starting at 1900 BST. Oakham Fire Station hosts the other course on 22 September, also starting at 1900 BST.

⚠️ Water depths can change unexpectedly.

⚠️ Uneven banks and river beds can make entering and exiting the water challenging.

Wildfire risk remains high
The risk of wildfires across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland remains very high. Please do your bit to support our fire crews and protect the people and places you love from the threat of wildfires:
• Avoid starting any fires, including disposable barbecues, firepits, garden incinerators and fireworks
• Do not light bonfires or campfires
• Avoid using barbecues (even those which are non-disposable) unless in a safe, controlled location away from vegetation
• Dispose of ci******es and other smoking materials thoroughly
• Don’t leave rubbish in the countryside, or on or near grass or vegetation - this particularly applies to glass, which can magnify heat
• Take care in large gatherings to make sure activities do not heighten the risk of fires – even if attending organised events
• Seek advice before taking community action to reduce fire risk, such as creating ‘fire breaks’ – there’s a chance this may make the situation worse
Residents should remain vigilant at all times and report fires in the open as soon as possible by dialling 999 – never assume someone else has made the call.
You can also help emergency services by downloading the free app What3Words to their smartphones, which helps crews pinpoint the location of fires in remote areas.

Following weeks of persistent dry weather, the risk of wildfires is now extremely high. Even a small flame can rapidly develop into a major wildfire, putting lives, homes, businesses and our emergency responders at risk.
