Update from Councillor Adi Malviya, Leader of Rochford District Council:

The Council are aware of unauthorised development on privately owned land at Lower Road/Greensward Lane.

This is a planning enforcement issue, which means the same procedures cannot be used as they would be for an unauthorised incursion on council land.

The Council are treating the matter as a breach of planning legislation and officers have visited the site to assess the situation and have issued a Temporary Stop Notice. A Temporary Stop Notice is a legal notice, which requires all work on site to stop immediately. We are also investigating further action we are legally allowed to take and will continue to monitor the site over the weekend.

There is a legal process the council have to follow and as we are sure people appreciate, it would not be appropriate to publicly release all of the details of the specific planning enforcement activity currently taking place.

I would like to thank council officers and Essex Police for their assistance today.

On Tuesday morning, our officers were alerted to an active fire in Hockley Woods. Although the visible flames had been extinguished, the fire was still burning and spreading underground.

Councillor Tino Callaghan, Chairman of the Environment Committee at Rochford District Council, said: "To protect both the public and our natural spaces, we operate a strict no fire and barbecue rule in our open spaces. Even when a fire appears to be out, heat can remain underground for long periods, allowing it to reignite and emerge elsewhere unexpectedly. I would like to thank the resident who made us aware of the fire and our officers for making the area safe."

With the current hot, dry weather, the risk of wildfires is extremely high. A small fire can quickly become a serious threat to our wildlife, neighbouring properties and public safety.

You can help us keep our parks and woodlands safe by:

🚫Not lighting fires or barbecues
đź’¬Reporting any signs of fire immediately

📍Please provide a 'what 3 word location' of the fire to help officers and the fire service quickly locate the area and attend.
