IT’S OFFICIAL

Richard Foord’s Liberal Democrats are raising your taxes.

During last year’s May elections we warned that if the Liberal Democrats took control in Devon they would do what they have already done in Lib Dem-run Somerset: raise council tax and make residents foot the bill for their failures. Sadly, that warning has now become reality.

Residents across East and Mid Devon will face a 4.99% council tax rise this year. A Band D bill will increase to £2,642 for 2026/27, which is higher than Labour-run Plymouth (£2,440) and higher than Conservative-run Torbay (£2,457).

Devon residents are now paying more while services continue to decline.

Higher taxes. Worse services. That is the reality under the Liberal Democrats.

Lib Dem led Devon County Council is planning to cut library opening hours across the Honiton & Sidmouth, reducing access to vital community services for residents of all ages.

These cuts don’t just affect book lending. Libraries provide warm spaces, digital access, parent and child groups, community larders and local support services. Reducing opening hours means fewer opportunities for people who rely on these services every week.

At the 2025 Conservative Party Conference, we set out a practical approach to achieving Net Zero that protects communities, jobs, and the local economy. Ambitious targets must not come at the cost of East Devon’s farmers, food production, or energy security.

Net Zero by 2050, as currently proposed, is unachievable and reckless, risking higher energy bills, damage to rural industries, and loss of productive farmland. Conservatives believe that environmental progress and economic security can go hand in hand.

In East Devon, this means supporting renewable energy where it works, on rooftops, brownfield sites, and industrial land, while ensuring that farming, food production, and rural communities are safeguarded. Practical measures such as investment in nuclear energy, local microgrids, battery storage, and energy-efficient technologies for homes and businesses are central to delivering Net Zero without harming the people and industries that sustain Devon.
