Cllr Cheryl Sweeney

Cllr Cheryl Sweeney I'm delighted by the trust placed in me by my fellow Denne Ward residents. I’m looking forward to being a strong champion on local issues.

I campaigned on issues that matter like local parking, safety, and sound management of Council’s finances.

New “Horsham Town Council” - approved at last night’s council meeting. The three unparished areas (Denne, Forest, Trafalgar) will now be represented by 18 parish councillors to be elected next spring for 5 year terms.

Results are in from the first Horsham Town Council consultation - a second one to follow in the summer. Please engage with this - important to be clear about how much control the new Unitary will actually delegate to this town council to manage the park, the Capitol, the town centre and so on. Also, how many councillors are really needed for the 3 wards. And the cost!

Horsham District Council recently invited local residents, businesses and community groups to share their views on whether Horsham Town Centre should have a town council.

Quick reminder that today is POLLING DAY for County Council by election for Riverside. Hoping all of you in this ward have already returned your postal vote or will pop down to your polling station - open to 10pm tonight. This will be a close race! The Conservative candidate is David Thompson - the only candidate who lives in Horsham.

I am the second Conservative Councillor to have won a district council by-election against a Lib Dem incumbent in Horsham this year and I think that is a trend we are seeing across the country.

26/12/2024

The overwhelming majority of residents in Horsham town do not want a Town Council. In 1995 60% of people said ‘No’ when the Lib Dem run council last tried to push it through. In 2000 in a consultation the people said ‘No’. In 2008 in a consultation with key stakeholders’ people were just not interested. The Lib Dems are empire building again.

At Governance Committee on 18 December 2024 the Lib Dem refused a referendum that officers advised them could have been held on the same day as the County Council elections in May 2025. Why are the Lib Dems afraid of a referendum? Is it because they lost it once before? The public dislike layers of bureaucracy and are angered when politicians’ empire build because at the end of the day it’s them that have to pay.

Lib Dems are pushing this though for the second time. Horsham said ‘No’ and meant it. Say ‘No’ to a Town Council in the consultation next year.

Lib Dems refused to reconsider their 300% Sunday parking increase in last night’s District Council meeting, or to consult with local businesses about it, even informally. I haven’t given up though! Watch this space for more updates!
