Endangered Species Day
On Friday 15th May, Endangered Species Day was celebrated worldwide, raising awareness of incredible wildlife and the essential work being done to protect it.
Just a few days later, HARC was pleased to welcome two adult White‑winged ducks — Asarcornis scutulata for Chester Zoo. Their arrival supports conservation efforts for a species that is facing severe threats in the wild, primarily due to widespread habitat destruction across Southeast Asia🌏. White‑winged Ducks – IUCN Status
The white‑winged duck is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to its small and declining population, with numbers continuing to fall because of habitat loss, hunting, and other human pressures. This species is also included in CITES Appendix I, highlighting its protected status under international conservation agreements. Ongoing conservation efforts are vital to prevent the extinction of this remarkable bird🦆. We’re happy to have been a part of their relocation and pleased to hear from that they have arrived safe and sound and settled in wonderfully! 🥰
