Whilst I may not have ever agreed with Ann Widdicombes views and had polar opposite political allegiances I have been shocked at some of the responses I have seen following her death. I don’t know what exactly happened or why and I am not going to speculate. But before we knew anything - and even when it was clear her death was violent - I saw far too many people celebrating the death of someone they considered a political enemy.
I think we owe it to ourselves and to our politics to be better than that.

I am a socialist because I believe that it is through this politics that we can create the conditions where people can thrive. Others in my party share the same goals as me, though they prefer the terms progressive or social democrat. Whatever we call it, we all share the burning desire to change society for the better. To work towards a society where we can create the conditions that smooth out the inequality that exists purely through luck of birth into privilege or poverty.
Hate achieves nothing , hate itself is a dehumanising emotion.

I am not going to claim to have never hated anyone in my life. I am no paragon. I too am human and full of flaws.

But I have worked to let go of hatred. Because when I didn’t it wasn’t those I hated who suffered – it was me. It made me less. Less happy, less effective - a smaller person with less space in my heart for the positive. And I realised that life, as we are all contemplating today, really is too short.

Ann Widdecombe campaigned for what she believed in - things that were anathema to me. I believe in things that were anathema to her. I hope my politics wins. But I refuse to weaken that politics by dehumanising it with hatred and vile behaviour.

10 years ago today Jo Cox was violently assassinated on the streets of Birstall by a right wing extremist.
Jo spent her life campaigning for all irrespective of religion, political views or the colour of their skin.
Her maiden speech as we know stated that in her constituency we were more united then divided. I wonder what she would make of the recent rise of the right wing.
Thinking of her family, friends and former colleagues today.
RIP Jo always remembered.

RIP Roy Hattersley a true socialist. I wonder what he thought of the modern Labour Party …..

Let’s hope everyone holds her to account

While continuing to defend her vile comments, new Reform Colne Valley West councillor has been bragging about how our taxes are paying for her councillor allowance.

Her views are:

🔴 supporting Tommy Robinson, a far right thug
🔴 calling for Sadiq Khan - a British citizen born in this country - to be deported from the country
🔴 fat shaming women
🔴 attacking trans women
🔴 saying she doesn’t support the police
🔴 sharing far right accounts like Britain First
🔴 saying climate change is a hoax

It’s her second day in the job as a councillor.

It is vital that the Reform party do the honourable thing and suspend her. We won’t hold our breath though

It was an honour to stand for election with these 2 guys. This is just a small insight into the work they have done as councillors. I truly hope your newly elected councillors can live up to the standard set by both Harry and Matthew

We didn’t win in Colne Valley West. I lost by 28 votes. It was close between us and Reform.

It is a huge honour to represent the Colne Valley for the last four years and a deeply rewarding experience. Thank you to everyone who voted for myself, Jayne and Matthew this week, and to Cllr Matthew McLoughlin, Cllr Beverley Addy and Lesley Warner for being fantastic ward colleagues (and for putting up with me).

Thank you to Jayne Fisher for Colne Valley for walking up every hill, knocking on every door, posting through every letter box, and making me laugh throughout the campaign. Thank you to our amazing team of Colne Valley West Labour volunteers - there is no better team and I am immensely grateful for everything you have done. And finally thank you to the council staff, partners and community groups who have worked with us - we would have achieved nothing without you.

I am immensely proud of our record, and if I am honest disappointed that we don’t have the opportunity to finish the things we set out to do. From securing extra playing and training hours at Colne Valley High School for Linthwaite Football Club, to working with local businesses and groups to draw up the Marsden Blueprint, upgrades to playgrounds at Dirker Rec and Causeway Crescent park, opposing cuts to Marsden and Slaithwaite libraries, setting up a hardship fund for Colne Valley families, setting up extra road safety patrols with the local police and Pride in Linthwaite, the canal towpath resurfacing, working with the community to make our leisure centre more sustainable, detached youth provision in Linthwaite, and more, we achieved a lot but that was only ever alongside our community.

I hope our new councillors remember that they are elected to represent every member of our community, whether you voted for them, voted for someone else, or didn’t vote at all, and whatever your race, religion or background.

Thank you for the nice messages. I won't be able to get round to responding all of them but they are lovely.
